New York with kids: things to do

Hours from AMNH, Bronx Zoo, NYSCI and Central Park Conservancy, checked 14 October 2026.
PlaceHoursNotes
American Museum of Natural HistoryDaily 10:00 to 17:30Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Under 3 waived, ticket still required. Child rate ages 3 to 12.
Bronx Zoo, 1 Nov 2026 to March 202710:00 to 16:30Exhibits close 16:00. Children's Zoo closed in winter. Ages 2 and under free.
New York Hall of ScienceWed to Sun 10:00 to 17:00Last entry 16:00. Friday 14:00 to 17:00 free general admission with a reservation.
Central ParkDaily 6:00 to 01:0021 playgrounds. Heckscher is 1.8 acres, restrooms 6:30 to 21:00.

Measure the child in inches, not years. Official MTA bus timetables say children under 44 inches tall ride free with an adult. Everyone else pays 3 US dollars on the subway and local buses, or 7.25 on an express bus. An older 2019 PDF mentioned a cap of three free children. The 2026 timetable pages we opened did not repeat it, so this guide does not invent that cap.

New York with children is then one museum, one park, and a zoo only if you accept winter hours. AMNH, Bronx Zoo, NYSCI, Central Park Conservancy and NPS pages were opened on 14 October 2026. The official NYC Tourism family pages did not load, so this shortlist is the operators.

Upper West Side: bones, then the playground

AMNH is the indoor morning that does not require a ferry. Daily 10:00 to 17:30. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Under 3s have waived admission and still need a ticket. Child tickets are ages 3 to 12. Strollers are welcome except in the theaters, which have dedicated parking. Lactation rooms sit in the Rose Center (lower level) and Gilder Center (floor 3).

Enter through Rose Center at 54 West 81st Street or Gilder Center at 415 Columbus Avenue if you have a pushchair. The 81st Street B and C station is not wheelchair accessible. One hall is enough. The dinosaur rooms are the obvious hour. Walk out when someone is done.

Central Park starts at the same block. The park is open 6:00 to 01:00. Twenty-one playgrounds. Heckscher, between 61st and 63rd on the West Side, is the oldest (1927) and the largest at 1.8 acres, with swings, slides, a climber and a water feature. Restrooms there run 6:30 to 21:00 every day of the year. That playground is the reset after AMNH. Do not add a second museum.

The Bronx in winter is a shorter zoo

Bronx Zoo hours from 1 November 2026 to March 2027 are 10:00 to 16:30, exhibits closing at 16:00. Children's Zoo, Monorail, Butterfly Garden, Zoo Shuttle and Budgie Landing stay shut in that window. Under 2s enter free. Child tickets are 3 to 12. Anyone 17 or under needs an adult 18 or over. Know before you go: no re-entry, no child scooters, stroller parking at indoor halls such as JungleWorld and Congo Gorilla Forest.

That is a half day, not a dawn-to-dusk safari. Eat, walk one loop, leave. If you are visiting in the warmer months, check the live table. This page prints the winter clock because that is what the operator showed on 14 October 2026.

Queens on a Friday afternoon

NYSCI is Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:00. Under 18s need an adult. Child tickets are ages 2 to 17. Friday Community Hours from 14:00 to 17:00 are free general admission if you reserve. Rocket Park Mini Golf and the 3D theater stay extra. The preschool area is built for under 6s. Strollers are allowed.

Friday at 14:00 is the cheap indoor plan if AMNH already used the morning. It is in Queens. Budget the subway time.

The statue is a ferry, not a park fee

NPS charges no entrance fee for the Liberty Island and Ellis Island museums. You still buy a Statue City Cruises ferry ticket. Children under 4 are listed at 0 US dollars. Crown access is restricted under 4. Hard Hat Tours start at 13. America the Beautiful passes do not cover the ferry. Treat this as a separate day with a queue, not a stop between AMNH and Heckscher.

A first New York stay that holds: AMNH plus Heckscher on day one, NYSCI on a Friday afternoon if you want a free indoor hour, the Bronx Zoo only if you accept the winter close. The family that adds the ferry, Times Square and a Broadway matinee on the same Saturday has a transit day. For another harbour city with a free museum kids' room, read Sydney with kids.

Crossing boroughs is the tax

AMNH to the Bronx Zoo is not a casual hop. The subway and the walk at either end will use the morning. If you do both in one day, you will do neither properly. NYSCI is in Queens. The statue ferry leaves from the southern tip of Manhattan. Those are four different days, or two if you are ruthless.

A three-day shape that holds: Upper West Side (AMNH plus Heckscher) on day one. Bronx Zoo on day two if you accept winter hours and a 16:00 exhibit close. Friday afternoon at NYSCI if your stay includes a Friday and you reserved the free Community Hours. The ferry waits for a fourth day, or it waits for the next trip.

Stroller parking at Bronx Zoo indoor halls means you will carry a sleeping toddler through JungleWorld. Plan for that. Child scooters are banned. Re-entry is banned. Eat before you go in, or eat inside, because leaving ends the ticket.

The 3-dollar subway fare does not care that you already paid at AMNH. Under 44 inches still rides free with an adult. Measure at the hotel, not on the platform during an argument.

Questions

Do children ride the New York subway free?

Official MTA bus timetables say children under 44 inches tall ride free with an adult. The current fare page lists 3 US dollars for most subway and local bus riders. An older 2019 PDF cap of three children was not repeated on the 2026 timetable pages, so this guide does not print that cap.

Is the Bronx Zoo a winter day?

Yes, but shorter. From 1 November 2026 to March 2027 it is 10:00 to 16:30, exhibits close 16:00, and the Children's Zoo is shut. Under 2s still enter free. Ages 17 and under need an adult 18 or over.

What is free on a Friday in Queens?

NYSCI Friday Community Hours from 14:00 to 17:00 are free general admission if you reserve. Last entry is still 16:00. Under 18s need an adult. The preschool room is for under 6s.
