Tap an Opal card for anyone aged 4 to 15 and stop thinking about single fares. Transport NSW lets ages 3 and under ride free. The child caps on metro, train, bus, ferry and light rail were 9.65 Australian dollars Monday to Thursday, 4.80 on Friday to Sunday and public holidays, and 25 dollars across a Monday-to-Sunday week. The Sydney Airport station access fee sits outside those caps. Off-peak and Friday-to-Sunday trips on metro, train, bus and light rail take a 30 percent discount.

Sydney with children is then a ferry to the zoo, a free museum room, and a playground that does not sell a ticket. Operator and Destination NSW pages were opened on 14 October 2026.

Taronga is the harbour day

Taronga opens 365 days. September to April: 09:30 to 17:00. May to August: 09:30 to 16:30. Twenty-eight hectares. The useful way in is the 12-minute ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 4. Bus 100 from QVB is about 30 minutes if the harbour is rough. The Wildlife Express inside the zoo is 5 dollars each way and free for members.

Tickets: child 4 to 15 is 33 dollars at the gate or from 29.70 online. Under 4 free. Adult 57 or from 51.30. Family 2 adults plus 2 children 162 or from 144. Buy before you stand at the kiosk with a hungry four-year-old.

Walk one loop. Sit. Eat. The ferry back is the rest of the afternoon. Do not add the Opera House stairs on the same legs.

The Opera House tour is a stair count

If someone still wants the building, the Sydney Opera House Tour is about 1 hour, up to 2.5 km and about 300 stairs. There is no lift. Child 5 to 15: 30 dollars pre-booked, 35 on the day. Under 5 free. Family of 2 adults and 2 children 15 and under: 130 pre-booked, 145 on the day. No tours on 25 and 31 December 2026.

That is a separate morning for school-age children who can climb. A toddler in a carrier for 300 stairs is a different conversation. Skip it.

Free indoor: Burra, then the flying fox

Australian Museum permanent galleries are free. No ticket. Daily 10:00 to 17:00, closed Christmas Day. Burra on Level 2 is the permanent kids' room, also free, 10:00 to 16:30. Under-12s must be accompanied and actively supervised. The café closes at 16:30. A parents room is on the same floor.

That is the wet-day plan that does not touch the card. One hour in Burra, a look at one gallery, out.

Darling Quarter Kids Playground is the free outdoor reset: a 21-metre flying fox, water play with pumps and buckets, ropes, swings, slides. Destination NSW also lists Saturday 20:30 fireworks at Darling Harbour on its free-family page. Fireworks are a watch, not a booking.

SEA LIFE at Darling Harbour is the paid indoor tank if Burra is not enough. Tickets: under 16s need an adult 18 or over. Ages 0 to 1 free. Weekday advanced child 26 dollars, 42 on the day. Weekend advanced 33.60. School and public-holiday advanced 40. Those prices move with demand. Check the live table.

A first Sydney stay that holds: ferry to Taronga on a dry day, Burra plus the Darling Quarter flying fox when it rains or when legs are short. The Opera House tour only if someone can climb 300 stairs. Opal caps do the rest. For another harbour city that measures children in inches on the subway, read New York with kids.

Harbour days versus inland days

Circular Quay is the hub: ferry to Taronga, walk to the Opera House, train to the Australian Museum a few stops inland. Darling Harbour is a different cluster (playground, SEA LIFE, WILD LIFE). Do not walk a tired five-year-old between Quay and Darling Harbour as if they were next door. Use the light rail or a bus and count it against the child Opal cap.

Friday to Sunday child caps drop to 4.80 dollars. If you can put the zoo on a Saturday, the ferry sits inside a cheaper daily cap. Monday to Thursday the cap is 9.65. The airport station fee is extra on the day you land or leave. Do not expect the weekly 25-dollar cap to swallow it.

Luna Park at Milsons Point is on the Destination NSW family list and open seven days with varied offers. This page does not print a ride price the park did not put on the tourism listing we used. If you go, read the operator board. It is a harbour-view extra, not a substitute for Taronga.

Burra closes at 16:30. A 16:00 arrival is a 30-minute visit. Arrive at 10:00 if the kids' room is the reason you came. Permanent galleries stay until 17:00. Closed Christmas Day only, which is the one date you need a playground instead.
