How to pack a family travel bag without overpacking
A useful travel packing list is short enough to finish and specific enough that you do not forget the one thing that ruins bedtime. Start from the stay: if the hotel or rental has a cot, high chair, towels or a washing machine, leave those at home. Then pack clothes by nights, not by fear. One outfit per person per night, plus one spare (two for babies and toddlers), covers almost every family vacation.
Put shared kit in one bag: toiletries, medicines, chargers, sun cream, a small first aid kit and a pouch for dirty laundry. Give each child from about age four a small backpack with a snack, a drink and one activity. Keep clothes in the shared bag so you are not hunting through five suitcases at 7am.
Why kids' ages and climate change the list
Age changes volume more than destination does. A baby needs nappies, wipes, milk kit and two spare outfits. A toddler needs sleep comforts, snacks and a stroller. A teen needs their own charger and, often, ID. This packing list generator only adds the age bands you enter, so a trip with a seven-year-old does not include a changing mat.
Climate does the rest. Hot weather means sun hats, light layers and after-sun. Cold weather means a real coat, hats and gloves. Rain means waterproofs and spare socks. A ski day and a beach day share almost nothing, which is why trip type is a separate control.
Print it, copy it, or keep the link
Tick boxes as you pack. Print opens a clean page with the categorized list. Copy puts a plain-text vacation packing list on the clipboard, with ticks preserved. The same choices and ticks are written into the page URL, so you can bookmark it or send it to the other adult who is packing the other bag.
When you want the days themselves planned around naps, walking pace and a budget cap, Ula is your AI travel companion on the waitlist.

Questions
How does this packing list generator work?
You enter each child's age, the number of nights, the destination climate and the trip type. The generator builds a categorized vacation packing list. Tick items as you pack. The ticks stay in the page URL and in this browser.
What belongs on a packing list for a baby?
A packing list for a baby starts with nappies, wipes, milk or bottle kit, a changing mat and two spare outfits per day. Add a portable sleep setup if the stay does not provide one, a comfort item, sun or weather cover for the stroller, and any medicines you already use. Leave bulky extras at home if the hotel or rental has a cot or high chair.
What belongs on a packing list for a toddler?
A packing list for a toddler needs extra spare clothes, a comfort toy, snacks, a cup, and a stroller or carrier you already use. Keep bedtime familiar: the usual sleep bag or blanket and one story. Pack a light rain layer and sun hat. Skip a second toy bag. One activity for the journey is enough.
What belongs on a packing list for a beach trip with kids?
A packing list for a beach trip with kids adds swimsuits, rash vests, sun hats, reef-safe sun cream, after-sun, water shoes and one bucket or beach toy. Pack a light cover-up and a spare towel if the stay does not provide extras. Leave a full sand-toy set at home.
What belongs on a ski packing list with kids?
A ski packing list with kids needs a ski jacket and pants, helmet, goggles, gloves, thermals and ski socks for each skier, plus warm shoes for after skiing. Add lip balm and a spare base layer. Hire skis and boots at the resort unless you already own a fitted pair.
What should I pack for a family vacation?
Start with IDs, one outfit per person per night plus a spare, sleepwear, a warm layer, a rain layer, toiletries, medicines, chargers and a day bag. Then add age-specific kit (nappies, a stroller, a comfort toy) and extras for a beach, city, ski, road or camping trip.
Does the list change with kids' ages and climate?
Yes. Babies and toddlers get extra spares and changing kit. School-age kids and teens get their own bag items. Hot weather adds sun hats and after-sun. Cold or ski trips add thermals and gloves. Rain adds waterproofs.
Can I save or print my travel packing list?
Yes. Use Print for a paper copy, or Copy to paste the list into a note. Reload the same link to keep your ticks. You can also bookmark the URL. No login is required.
Do I need an account to use this tool?
No. The family packing list generator is free and works in the browser. Hey Ula, your AI travel companion, is on a waitlist if you want help planning the rest of the trip.
