Tokyo with kids: things to do

Skip Miraikan until 22 April 2027. The official admission page says the house is closed for refurbishment from 1 October 2026. Odaiba is then a waterfront walk, not a science morning. The indoor science plan that is actually open is the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno, where high-school students and younger enter free.

Tokyo with children is a fare-band city first. Tokyo Metro, Toei, Ueno Zoo and KidZania pages were opened on 14 October 2026. JMA normals for Tokyo are on the climate note at the end, not in the body as a forecast.

Who pays on Metro and Toei

Tokyo Metro's age page is the table to read before anyone taps. Adult fare starts at 12, unless that 12-year-old is still in elementary school, in which case they stay on the child fare. Ages 6 to 11 pay half. Infants under 1 ride free. Toddlers aged 1 to 6: up to two ride free with an adult or a child. A third toddler pays the child fare. Count the toddlers, not the adults.

Toei uses the same bands. Child ordinary fares are half the adult fare. The Tokyo Subway Ticket, which covers Metro and Toei, is 500, 750 and 1,000 yen for a child on the 24, 48 and 72-hour versions (adult 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000). Toei's own 1-day pass is 350 yen for a child, 700 for an adult.

GO TOKYO shortens this to "under six, public transportation is free". That matches the toddler band, not a third toddler and not a 6-year-old already in school. Buy what the operator table says.

GO TOKYO's accessibility page is the practical add-on: priority seats, station toilets with changing tables, sometimes hot water for formula, and a warning to avoid 07:30 to 09:00 and 17:30 to 19:30. Pushchairs are normal. Rush hour is not.

Ueno as the one outdoor-and-indoor loop

Stay in one park. Ueno Zoo opens 9:30 to 17:00, with tickets sold until one hour before closing. Closed Monday (or the next day if Monday is a holiday) and 29 December to 1 January. Up to 6th grade enters free. Junior high is 200 yen. General is 600 yen. That free band is why Ueno works with primary-age children.

Across the park, the National Museum of Nature and Science is 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 30 minutes before close. High-school students and younger are free. General and university tickets are 630 yen. Dinosaurs and the Japanese ecosystem rooms are the obvious hour. Do not add the zoo and this hall and a third museum. Pick the zoo or the hall, then sit by the pond.

Miraikan's published fees (630 yen adult, 210 yen for 18 and under, preschool free) are for when it reopens after 22 April 2027. They are not a 2026 ticket.

KidZania is a booked shift, not a drop-in

KidZania Tokyo in Toyosu runs two paid shifts: 9:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 21:00. They are separate admissions. Starting prices including tax: first shift from 5,000 yen for ages 3 to 15 and from 2,600 yen for ages 16 and over; second shift from 3,800 and 2,300 yen. Prices move by date. Wednesday is English Wednesday, which is the day GO TOKYO tells visiting families to book.

Adults watch from windows and screens. The jobs are for the children. Book one shift. The 16:00 start is for a day that already had an outdoor morning. The 9:00 start is the whole day.

A first Tokyo shape that holds: Ueno Zoo if you have a child still in primary school, or the Nature and Science hall if you want indoor bones and no zoo walk. KidZania on a Wednesday if you have a 3-to-15-year-old and can spare a full shift. Metro tickets that match the age table. Miraikan later, when the doors open again.

If you want another metro-and-aquarium city in this set, Singapore with kids is the comparison. Tokyo is the one where the third toddler on the train is the fare you forgot.

Ueno or Toyosu, not both before supper

Ueno Park is the zoo, the Nature and Science hall, a pond and a playground. That is already a day. Toyosu is a different railway and a booked KidZania shift. Crossing the city to add the second after the first is how you hit the 17:30 rush hour GO TOKYO told you to avoid.

If Monday is your only outdoor day, Ueno Zoo is closed (or closed Tuesday when Monday was a holiday). Use the Nature and Science hall, which does not follow the zoo's Monday rule, or sit in the park. Do not assume every Ueno door is open.

KidZania prices move by date. The 14 October 2026 weekday second-shift calendar listed 3,800 yen for ages 3 to 15 and 2,300 yen for ages 16 and over. Those are a dated example, not a promise. Book the live calendar. Adults pay less than children because the jobs are for the children. You are paying to watch.

JMA 1991 to 2020 normals for Tokyo put January at 5.4°C and August at 26.9°C. June rain is 167.8 mm, September 224.9 mm, October 234.8 mm. Summer indoor plans matter. Miraikan would have been the Odaiba indoor hall. Until 22 April 2027 it is not.

Questions

Do under-6s travel free on the Tokyo Metro?

Infants under 1 ride free. Toddlers aged 1 to 6: up to two ride free with an adult or a child; a third pays the child fare. Ages 6 to 11 pay half. GO TOKYO's shorter line that under-sixes travel free matches the toddler band, not a third toddler.

Is Miraikan open?

No. It is closed for refurbishment from 1 October 2026 to 22 April 2027. Use Ueno's National Museum of Nature and Science instead. High-school students and younger enter that hall free.

Which KidZania shift should you book?

The first shift is 9:00 to 15:00, from 5,000 yen for ages 3 to 15. The second is 16:00 to 21:00, from 3,800 yen. They are separate admissions. Wednesday is English Wednesday.
