Desk and session prices from Explora, Bioparco, ATAC and the Colosseum park, checked 13 October 2026.

TicketPriceNotes
Explora, from 3 years and adults12 euros0 to 12 months free. 12 to 36 months 8 euros. Thursday 8 euros except holiday Thursdays.
Bioparco desk, adult19 eurosReduced 14 euros over 1 metre to age 10. Under 1 metre free. Last entry 1 hour before close.
Colosseum and state museums, under 18FreeUnder 12 accompanied. Book at ticketing.colosseo.it. EU ages 18 to 25: 2 euros.
ATAC, children to age 10Free with a paying adultInside Roma Capitale. Trenitalia: under 4 free if not occupying a seat.

Reserve an Explora session before anyone talks about the Colosseum. Via Flaminia 82 runs four clocked visits, stays shut on Monday, and refuses grown-ups who turn up alone. That reservation holds the day together. Ancient stone can wait until after lunch, and it is free under 18 once you collect the ticket.

Explora, Bioparco in Villa Borghese, and a short Colosseum slot are the three things a first Rome stay with children can actually finish. ATAC carries anyone to age 10 at no extra fare beside a paying adult. Luneur and Technotown split by age, so you choose one. Desk figures below were read on Explora, Bioparco, ATAC, the Colosseum park and Turismo Roma on 13 October 2026. Bioparco opening hours are omitted because official pages did not agree.

Hold the morning for Explora

The 10:00 shift

Explora is written for ages 0 to 11 and occupies more than 2,000 square metres. Tuesday to Sunday the house runs four sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes: 10:00 to 11:45, 12:00 to 13:45, 15:00 to 16:45 and 17:00 to 18:45. Monday it is shut. Book the weekend. Walk-up hope is a poor plan.

Tickets: ages 0 to 12 months free; 12 to 36 months 8 euros; from 3 years 12 euros; adults 12 euros. Thursday drops to 8 euros unless that Thursday is a holiday. Adults must have children with them, and children must have adults. One parent cannot hold a table nearby while the other "just looks".

The 10:00 shift leaves you a late lunch and a still-usable afternoon. The 17:00 shift is for a day that already had an outdoor morning. Do not book two shifts. The rooms are the same rooms.

After the session

Eat, then pick one: Bioparco inside Villa Borghese, or a booked Colosseum slot. Not both. Villa Borghese is the reset if the session ran hot. The Colosseum is the reset if someone still wants a ruin and can handle a queue that moves.

Colosseum tickets that cost nothing under 18

Italian state museums and the Colosseum are free for visitors under 18. Under-12s must be accompanied. You still book. The free ticket is issued at ticketing.colosseo.it. EU visitors aged 18 to 25 pay 2 euros.

Free is not the same as short. Go in with one level or one view in mind, then leave. A toddler in a dense crush on the arena floor is a medical plan, not a cultural one. If the timed slot is late, fill the morning with Explora or the park, not with a second ruin.

Bioparco prices, not hours

Bioparco sells at the desk for 19 euros adult and 14 euros reduced for anyone over 1 metre tall up to age 10. Under 1 metre enters free. You must be through the gate at least an hour before they close. The park is shut on 25 December. Turismo Roma places those 17 hectares inside Villa Borghese.

Hours are not printed here on purpose. Two official sources disagreed, so a closing time would be an invention. Use the ticket page on the morning you go, and treat that one-hour-before-close rule as the only clock you can trust in advance.

Seventeen hectares is a loop, a sit-down and a drink. It is not a prelude to the Forum. If you already spent 1 hour 45 minutes at Explora, this is the rest of the day.

ATAC and the age-10 rule

ATAC lets children to age 10 ride free with a fare-paying adult inside Roma Capitale. That is the city-bus and metro rule that makes Explora and Villa Borghese cheap to reach. The same page says Trenitalia carries under-4s free only if that child is not sitting in a seat. A regional train is not ATAC. Buy the right ticket for the rail you are actually boarding.

An 11-year-old pays. Count ages on the morning of travel, not on the age they "almost" are. Pushchairs on buses are common and tight. Metro stairs are the reason some families stay on the bus for the Flaminia hop.

Luneur or Technotown, by age

Turismo Roma's family itinerary points children to age 12 at Luneur and ages 12 and over at Technotown. That split is the decision. A mixed group of 8 and 13 does not get a blended venue. Choose the site that fits the oldest child you are bringing, or split the adults for an hour.

Neither of those is a substitute for Explora. Explora is the 0-to-11 museum with shifts. Luneur and Technotown are the extra outing if you have a second day and the age band is clear.

Rome with children is a booked session, a park with animals, and one ruin that does not charge under-18s. Adding a second ruin, a fountain circuit and a late dinner is how the city fights you. Stopping after Bioparco still counts as seeing Rome.

Questions

Do children pay on ATAC buses and metro?

Children to age 10 travel free with a fare-paying adult inside Roma Capitale. On Trenitalia, under-4s travel free only if they do not occupy a seat. Older children need a ticket.

Can an adult visit Explora without a child?

No. Explora requires adults to visit with children and children to visit with adults. Book weekend shifts. The rooms are for ages 0 to 11.

Is the Colosseum free for children?

Italian state museums and the Colosseum are free under 18. Under-12s must be accompanied. You still book a free ticket at ticketing.colosseo.it. EU visitors aged 18 to 25 pay 2 euros.

Should you choose Luneur or Technotown?

Turismo Roma writes Luneur for children to 12 and Technotown for ages 12 and over. Pick the one that matches the oldest child you are taking, and do not stack both with Explora on the same date.
