One o'Clock Gun13:00Fires except on Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas. Stand on the castle walls if you want to hear it.

Time the castle around the gun, not around the gift shop. The One o'Clock Gun fires at 13:00 except on Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas, and Historic Environment Scotland tells you to allow two hours for a standard visit or three hours if you follow the family itinerary. That clock is the spine of a first day on the rock.

Operator pages were opened on 13 October 2026. A price or hour that was not published is left out, including any castle rate for a child under 7.

The gun, last entry and a booked ticket

Edinburgh Castle tickets listed an adult aged 16 to 64 at 23.50 pounds online and 26 pounds if you buy at the desk. A child aged 7 to 15 was 11.50 pounds online and 13 pounds walk-up. Anyone under 16 must visit with an adult. Tickets sell out. When the online allocation is gone, the desk will not sell you a replacement.

From 1 October to 23 December the castle listed opening at 09:30, last entry at 16:00 and closing at 17:00. In summer last entry moves to 17:00 and closing to 18:00. It is closed on 25 and 26 December. On 1 January it opens at 11:00.

Two hours is the standard visit. Three hours is the family itinerary. If you want the gun, be on the walls before 13:00 on a day it fires. Then walk down. Do not add a second paid fortress on the same morning.

The climb is the part that surprises a five-year-old more than the ramparts. There is no published under-7 castle price on the tickets page, so that age is omitted here. If you have a younger child, read the live ticket list the morning you go, or skip the rock and keep the free museum.

The other hill, with a donation line

Edinburgh Zoo sits on a hill of its own. Online with a donation, an adult was listed at 30 pounds and a child aged 3 to 15 at 22.50 pounds. Without a donation those tickets were 27.25 pounds and 20.45 pounds. Walk-up tickets cost more than either online rate. Under 3s enter free. Under 16s must come with an adult aged 16 or over.

October hours were 10:00 to 17:00, with last entry one hour before closing. November and December drop to 10:00 to 16:00. April to September run 10:00 to 18:00. Indoor rooms may close 30 minutes early. The zoo is closed on 25 December. Parking was listed at 5 pounds.

Build the day around last entry, not around a second ticket in town. The hill is the whole afternoon. Eat before you climb, or accept that you will stop halfway.

Do not pair the castle and the zoo on the same date unless you have older children and a very early start. Each one is a hill, a queue and a sit-down.

Chambers Street when you need a roof

The National Museum of Scotland is free. It opens daily 10:00 to 17:00, closes on 25 December, and opens 12:00 to 17:00 on 26 December and 1 January. That is the rain plan, the Boxing Day plan and the first-morning plan if the castle is sold out.

Family rooms named on the families page are Imagine, Adventure Planet, Explore and Animal World. Start in one of those, not in a decorative gallery. There is a buggy store on Level 1. Packed lunches belong in the Entrance Hall Lunch Space, which is the sentence that saves you a café bill.

Leave while legs still work. The building is large enough to spend a day; a first visit with children is two rooms and a sandwich.

One rock, one museum, not a loop of both hills

The castle and the museum sit in the Old Town. The zoo does not. Treat the zoo as a separate date. A workable shape:

  • Book the castle for a morning that includes 13:00 if you want the gun, then walk to Chambers Street for Imagine or Animal World and a packed lunch.
  • Keep the zoo for a day that starts at 10:00 and ends at last entry, with the 5 pound car park only if you are driving.

If the castle is sold out, reverse it: museum at 10:00, a short Old Town walk, early supper. The rock can wait for a ticket that actually exists.

What you can drop without losing the city

You do not need a second castle. You do not need to walk every gallery at the museum. You do not need to pay the zoo donation if the 27.25 and 20.45 line is the one you want; you do need to book it online, because the walk-up rate is higher.

Closed days to keep on a card: castle 25 and 26 December; zoo 25 December; museum 25 December. Late starts: castle 11:00 on 1 January; museum 12:00 on 26 December and 1 January. Those are the dates that break a family plan written at home.

Edinburgh with children works when you pick one hill per day and keep Chambers Street as the free roof. It fails when you promise the castle, the zoo and a late lunch on the same ticket.
