  6. Brussels with kids: things to do

By Ramya ChinnaduraiPublished 13 October 2026Updated 13 October 2026

Age and height fit from STIB, Atomium, Natural Sciences and visit.brussels, checked 13 October 2026.

PlaceAgesWhy it fits
Atomium, free child115 cm or shorterTaller children up to 17 pay 9 euros. Adult door prices disagreed on official pages, so they are omitted.
AtomiumPlayfrom age 6, freeIncluded with the Atomium ticket. Design Museum, 150 metres away, is also included.
Children's Museum, Ixelles4 to 12Book ahead. Hours are unconventional; read the day's slot, not a generic museum timetable.
Coudenberg treasure hunt5 to 8Listed by visit.brussels as a booked hunt, not a walk-in gallery.
Natural Sciences, Rue Vautier 290 to 2 free; 3 to 25 at 6.00 eurosAges 26+ pay 15.00 euros, 65+ pay 11. Free after 13:00 on the first Wednesday. Closed Monday.
STIBunder 6 freeNo ticket. Must travel with someone aged 12 or over.

Measure the child, then buy the Atomium ticket. Anyone 115 cm or shorter enters free, a taller child up to 17 pays 9 euros, and AtomiumPlay from age 6 is free once you are inside. Height, not a guessed age band, is what the door uses.

The notes below come from pages opened on 13 October 2026. Official Atomium pages disagreed on the adult price, so that figure is omitted. Mini-Europe is omitted because its site did not load.

Height at Heysel, and a last entry of 17:30

The Atomium opens daily 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30. On 24 and 31 December it opens 10:00 to 16:00, last entry 15:30. On 25 December and 1 January it opens 12:00 to 18:00. It closes for maintenance from 18 January to 5 February 2027. If your dates fall in that window, drop Heysel from the plan rather than hoping the spheres reopen early.

Tickets use 115 cm as the free line. Taller children up to 17 pay 9 euros. The same ticket includes the Design Museum, 150 metres away. AtomiumPlay is free from age 6. Bring a child who will use the play area, or skip the add-on in your head; it is already in the price.

Adult door prices are not printed here. Two official pages did not agree. Pay what the till shows that morning.

Heysel is a trip, not a stroll from Grand-Place. Pair the spheres with the Design Museum on the same ticket, then leave. Do not add a second paid park next door when that park's own site would not load.

Rue Vautier on a Tuesday, not a Monday

The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences stands at Rue Vautier 29. It opens Tuesday to Friday 09:30 to 17:00 and Saturday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00. It is closed on Monday. Ages 0 to 2 enter free. Ages 3 to 25 pay 6.00 euros. Ages 26 and over pay 15.00 euros. Ages 65 and over pay 11 euros. After 13:00 on the first Wednesday of the month, entry is free.

That Wednesday afternoon is the budget indoor hour if your dates line up. On any other day the 6.00 euro band is the one that covers most school-age children and a surprising number of adults still in education.

Closed Monday is the fact that breaks a plan written at home. If Monday is your only full day, go to Heysel instead, unless that week is the January to February 2027 maintenance close.

Dinosaurs are why families come. The fee table is why you still book. Go in, see the hall you came for, and walk out before anyone asks for a second museum.

Ixelles rooms that book for 4-to-12s

visit.brussels lists the Children's Museum in Ixelles for ages 4 to 12. You book. Hours are unconventional. Read the slot on the museum's own page, not a generic "open daily" line copied from another city.

The same directory lists a Coudenberg treasure hunt for ages 5 to 8. That is a booked hunt, not a walk-in basement. Treat it as the indoor hour for a child in that band, then go back outside.

Neither of those rooms replaces the Natural Sciences hall. They replace a bored hour in a silent painting gallery. If you do not have a 4-to-12-year-old, skip Ixelles and keep Rue Vautier.

STIB under 6, with someone 12 or over

STIB lets children under 6 travel free with no ticket, if they are with someone aged 12 or over. An under-6 with a 12-year-old companion meets the rule. An under-6 alone does not. From age 6 you need a ticket.

That is the whole child fare on this page. Older child prices were not copied from a second STIB table, so they are omitted. Buy the ticket the adult would buy, and keep the under-6s next to that adult.

Trams and metros take pushchairs. The rule you actually need is the companion age, not a map of every lift.

A first day that stays on one line

A workable shape: metro toward Heysel for the Atomium on a day it is open (not 18 January to 5 February 2027), last entry 17:30, Design Museum included, AtomiumPlay if someone is 6 or over. Another day: Rue Vautier, closed Monday, 6.00 euros from age 3, or free after 13:00 on the first Wednesday. Book Ixelles only if you have a 4-to-12-year-old and a reserved slot.

Christmas hours at the Atomium are shorter on 24 and 31 December (close 16:00, last entry 15:30) and later to open on 25 December and 1 January (12:00). Write those on the same card as the STIB companion rule.

Brussels with children is a height mark, a Monday close and a booked Ixelles slot. It is not every dome in Heysel and a park whose website would not open.

Questions

Do children need a STIB ticket in Brussels?

Under 6s travel free and need no ticket, but they must be with someone aged 12 or over. A 6-year-old needs a ticket. An under-6 travelling alone does not meet the rule.

Is the Atomium free for children?

A child 115 cm or shorter enters free. A taller child up to 17 pays 9 euros. AtomiumPlay is free from age 6. Official pages disagreed on the adult price, so that figure is left out. Last entry is 17:30 on a normal day.

When is the Institute of Natural Sciences free?

Ages 0 to 2 are always free. Everyone else can enter free after 13:00 on the first Wednesday of the month. Ordinary prices are 6.00 euros for ages 3 to 25, 15.00 from 26, and 11 euros from 65. Closed Monday.
