Manali trip cost

Manali trip cost for a family

A Manali trip cost for a family is the sum of about ten lines you price yourself: getting there, stay, local taxis, permits, snow activities, food and warm gear. Very few of these have a fixed official price, so this post gives you the rules that change the bill (child bus fares, booking charges, cancellation cuts, permit portals) and the official page to price each line on.

We read every source on 1 November 2026. We do not print rupee figures that we could not read on an official page that day. Fees change, so confirm on the booking page before you pay.

If you want Manali as a summer break instead, we cover it in summer vacation places in India for families. This post is about cost and logistics, with a winter snow trip in mind.

When the snow is there

The Kullu district administration's Location and Climate page splits the year into summer (April to July), rains (August and September) and winter (October to March). It says December to February is "very chilly" with heavy frost, and that snowfall "generally occurs during December and January", with early snow possible in November.

It also says the snow "does not remain on the ground for a long time." That page describes the district as a whole, so do not assume snow at your hotel door. Plan a day at a higher spot.

The district's Places of Interest page lists Solang Valley at about 13 km from Manali, between Manali and Kothi, with the nearest glacier to Manali and skiing slopes. For most families on a winter trip, Solang is the realistic snow day.

For other December options across India, see best places to visit in December in India with kids.

Getting there: flight, bus or your own car

By air. The Airports Authority of India page for Kullu Manali Airport says the airport is at Bhuntar, 50 km from Manali. The Kullu district How to Reach page says flights connect it with Delhi, Chandigarh and Shimla, and that the Delhi flight takes about an hour and a half. Note that page was last updated in 2019, so check current routes when you search fares.

By HRTC Volvo. Himachal Road Transport Corporation runs Volvo coaches to and from Manali. Its FAQ page says you can book on the HRTC online portal, at HRTC counters or on its apps, up to 60 days in advance. Three rules affect your bill:

  • Booking online adds a 1.5 percent service charge, which is not refunded if you cancel (HRTC FAQ).
  • Booking at an HRTC counter has no service or reservation charge (HRTC FAQ).
  • You must carry ID when travelling on an e-ticket, or you may be asked to buy a new ticket (HRTC FAQ).

The fare itself depends on route and date. Search it on the HRTC online booking portal.

By car. The Kullu district How to Reach page gives Delhi to Kullu as 570 km and Chandigarh to Kullu as 312 km, and its Manali page puts Manali 45 km from Kullu. Plug your route into the road trip fuel cost calculator for the fuel line. Add tolls and any state entry tax for out of state cars; we could not open an official page listing that tax on the day we checked, so ask at the border or your hotel before you drive.

Rohtang Pass permit and the Atal Tunnel

The Kullu district site links to the official Rohtang permit portal from its tourism menu. That is where permits for vehicles going up to the pass are issued, along with the fees and daily limits.

The portal did not load for us on 1 November 2026, so we are not printing a permit fee, a daily vehicle cap or a closed day. Other sites repeat figures for all three, and some disagree with each other. Check the portal for your date before you promise the kids Rohtang.

The district's Places of Interest page puts Rohtang at about 3,978 m above sea level and says the crest is occasionally hit by severe blizzards and snow storms in early summer and late autumn. In winter, treat Rohtang as uncertain and Solang as the plan.

The Atal Tunnel runs under the Rohtang Pass. The PIB factsheet says it is 9.02 km long, its South Portal is 25 km from Manali at 3,060 m, and its North Portal is near Sissu in the Lahaul valley at 3,071 m. It says the tunnel connects Manali to Lahaul Spiti "throughout the year", where the valley was earlier cut off for about six months a year by snow.

Lahaul trips through the tunnel may have their own permit rules, which we could not confirm. Ask your hotel or taxi operator what applies on your dates.

How to price the lines that move most

Bus versus flight for a family of four. Run both. On HRTC, a child under 5 rides free without a seat and a child aged 5 to under 12 pays half (HRTC FAQ). That can change the gap between bus and air a lot for families with young kids. A free child has no seat, so for an overnight run, think about whether a lap child will sleep.

Cancellation risk. Winter plans move with the weather. HRTC's cancellation rules for e-tickets: 10 percent is deducted if you cancel up to 12 hours before departure, 25 percent between 4 and 12 hours, and there is no refund within 4 hours. The clock runs from the bus's originating station, not your boarding point. E-tickets can only be cancelled by the user from their account.

Altitude. The NHS altitude sickness page says it can happen usually above 2,500 m, and symptoms usually start 6 to 10 hours after arriving at height. Symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, feeling sick, tiredness, dizziness and poor sleep. The Atal Tunnel portals are above 3,000 m and Rohtang is higher still, so a day trip up there is above that line.

The NHS advice is to go up slowly, avoid dehydration, and if someone feels unwell, rest at the same altitude and not go higher. It says to go down if symptoms do not improve after a day or get worse, and to get medical help straight away for confusion, breathlessness at rest, blue or grey lips, or being very sleepy and hard to wake. That page has no separate advice for children, so ask your paediatrician before a trip with a baby or toddler.

Cold. The district site describes December to February as "very chilly" with heavy frost (Kullu Location and Climate). Pack layers, waterproof gloves and spare socks for snow play, and plan short outdoor stints with warm breaks. Our packing list tool helps you build it by age.

Sleep and routine. A long bus ride plus a cold room can upset naps. Read toddler sleep in a hotel room before you book, and if your kids are far apart in age, plan a trip with kids of different ages has a way to split days.

Easy days. Vashisht, about 3 km beyond Manali, is known for its hot sulphur springs, per the district site. Keep one low-key day in town between snow days.
