One day trips from Mumbai with kids

For a day trip from Mumbai with kids, Elephanta Caves is the one place here with an official child rule: the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) page says children below 15 years enter free, and the caves are closed on Monday. This guide gives the distances, hours and access notes that official pages state for six places, labels the two news reports we use, and says which details we could not confirm.

Sourced 27 October 2026. We read each official page linked below on 27 October 2026. Distances are as the pages give them, from the starting point each page names, and we add no travel time, fare or toll of our own. Hours, ferries and trains change, so check before you go.

Choosing by month or distance across several cities? Use the weekend getaway finder. This guide goes into the day-trip detail for Mumbai. Doing the same from another city? Read the guides to one day trips from Delhi with kids and one day trips from Hyderabad with kids.

How to choose a day trip with kids

  • Mondays. The ASI page closes Elephanta on Monday, and Maharashtra Tourism says boating at Sanjay Gandhi National Park does not run on Mondays. Plan those two for another day.
  • Steps and slopes. Maharashtra Tourism says Kanheri needs some steps to reach the caves, and that the paths at Bhaja may become slippery in rain.
  • Water and rail. Elephanta is a ferry ride from the Gateway of India, and Matheran is car-free beyond Dasturi Naka. Both depend on services that change with the monsoon, so check them the week you go.
  • Monsoon. Maharashtra Tourism calls June to September the most popular time to visit Lonavala, and says roads can be slippery then.

Ferries and the toy train: what the news said this year

These are news reports, not official notices. We use them only for dates, and we could not confirm them on an official page.

  • Gateway ferries in the monsoon (news). Pudhari reported on 18 May 2026 that, by order of the Maharashtra Maritime Board, the Gateway of India to Mandwa ferry and the private ferries on the Gateway to Elephanta route would stop from 26 May to 31 August 2026. Source: Pudhari.
  • Mandwa ferry back from 1 September (news). eSakal reported on 25 August 2026 that the Gateway to Mandwa ferry would restart on 1 September, by a Maritime Board decision. Mandwa is the jetty for the Alibaug side. Source: eSakal.
  • Matheran toy train (news). Pune Pulse reported on 15 June 2026 that Central Railway would suspend regular passenger services on the Neral to Aman Lodge section from 15 June to 15 October 2026, with shuttle trains between Aman Lodge and Matheran. We could not open the Central Railway site and found no official notice of the restart, so check before you plan on the toy train. Source: Pune Pulse.

Check before you go

  • Elephanta. Confirm the ferry is running and the day is not a Monday, and check the Indian adult rate at the counter, since the ASI page does not show it.
  • Matheran. Confirm whether the Neral toy train is running, or plan to reach Dasturi Naka by road and walk from there.
  • Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri. Avoid Monday if boating matters to you, and check the gate hours at the park.
  • Karnala. Check hours and fees with the forest department before you drive out from Panvel.

Places we could not confirm

We could not confirm these on an official page on 27 October 2026, so we say nothing about them: Alibaug's distance from Mumbai, which no Maharashtra Tourism page we read gives, Elephanta ferry fares and first and last ferry times, the Elephanta island toy train fare, the Indian adult rate at Elephanta, Kanheri, Karla and Bhaja ticket rates and hours, Sanjay Gandhi National Park entry, safari and mini train fees and gate hours, Karnala hours and fees, Matheran's entry tax and toy train fares, and the Mumbai to Mandwa ro-ro fares and timetable.

What we left out

We left out a ranking of the places, drive times and tolls that no official page states, ferry and train fares, restaurant and parking advice, and any fee that an official page we read does not state.
