Darjeeling trip cost

Darjeeling trip cost for a family

The Darjeeling trip cost for a family is the sum of a handful of lines: getting to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or Bagdogra, the drive up, your stay, the toy train, and a few entry tickets. Only some of those prices are published on official pages, and we list them below with links. For the rest, we tell you where to check the live price instead of guessing.

Every fee and distance below comes from an official page we read on 1 November 2026. Fees change, so confirm before you pay.

If you are still deciding between hill stations, our summer vacation places for families post covers Darjeeling alongside other options. This post is only about money, tickets and logistics.

How you get to Darjeeling

There are two gateways, and both sit in the plains below the hills.

  • By air: Bagdogra is the nearest airport, 90 km from Darjeeling via NH 110, with flights from cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.
  • By rail: New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri are the two closest mainline stations. The district site puts Darjeeling Himalayan Railway station 88 km from New Jalpaiguri.
  • By road: Siliguri is 77 km away via NH 55. Buses leave from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand in Siliguri, and shared or hired vehicles are available from the airport and station.

The same page says there are prepaid taxi stands at NJP station and Bagdogra airport. It lists four road routes up from Siliguri: Tindharia and Kurseong, Dudhiya and Mirik, Rohini, and Pankhabari. The page does not publish taxi fares, so check the rate at the prepaid counter before you load the bags.

If you are coming by train from Kolkata or further, the fare depends on class and how early you book. Use our train booking date calculator to see when your booking window opens.

We have not added a total on purpose. A family flying from Delhi and a family on the train from Kolkata will land on very different numbers, so add your own lines in the budget calculator.

Toy train: what to know before you book

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The short joyride runs between Darjeeling and Ghoom. On the way it passes Batasia Loop, where the line goes round in a circle and drops 1,000 ft in altitude. Batasia Loop is 5 km from Darjeeling town, and there is a Gorkha War Memorial at its centre. The district site describes Ghoom as the highest point in the world where locomotive engines operate.

On price: we could not load the official DHR site on 1 November 2026, and news reports give different steam and diesel fares, so we are not printing one. Search for the joyride on IRCTC for your date; the fare at checkout is the one that counts.

Entry fees and closed days

Fees are small. Closed days matter more.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. The official fees and timing page lists ₹110 for adults from India and SAARC countries, ₹180 for foreigners, free entry for children below 6, and ₹10 for a camera. It is open 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and closed on Thursdays. Tickets can be booked online through the West Bengal Zoo Authority e-ticket page. The zoo was established in 1958.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. The HMI campus page describes a museum established in 1957, with sections on mountaineering history, Mount Everest and Himalayan life. It holds equipment from the 1953 first ascent of Everest. The page does not list museum fees or timings. It does mention a Tree Top Rope Course open to visitors aged 7 and up, as a walk-in or with pre-booking.

Happy Valley Tea Estate. The district page says it was established in 1854, sits 3 km north of town, and is open Tuesday to Saturday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM. March to May is the busiest time, when plucking and processing are in progress.

Tiger Hill. At sunrise, the district page says, Kanchenjunga's peaks light up before the sun reaches lower ground, and Everest is just visible on a clear day. No fee is listed.

Peace Pagoda. The district page says it stands 28.5 metres tall on the slopes of Jalapahar hill, a few kilometres from town. It was inaugurated on 1 November 1992. No fee is listed.

Darjeeling with kids

Child fares on Indian Railways trains. A Ministry of Railways release on PIB says children under 5 travel free if you do not book a separate berth or seat. If you choose to book one, you pay the full adult fare. For children aged 5 to under 12, the 2016 child fare rule charges the full adult fare if you ask for a separate berth or seat. If you don't, it charges half the adult fare. These are general Indian Railways rules. Whether the same split applies to toy train joyrides, check on the IRCTC booking screen before you pay.

Zoo. Children below 6 enter free.

HMI rope course. Only for ages 7 and up, so a younger sibling will be watching.

Altitude. Darjeeling town sits at 2,042 metres, and Happy Valley Tea Estate is at 2,100 metres. That is a big climb from the plains at Siliguri, which the district site puts at 400 metres. Pack layers for everyone and build in a slow first evening. Our packing list tool makes a list for each child by age.

Pace. Tiger Hill means a sunrise start, so give small children a nap window afterwards.

When to go

The zoo's own page says March to June and September to January are the best months to visit, when the weather stays clear and pleasant. The tea estate is busiest from March to May, during plucking.

For a wider view of the hills and the North East by month, see our best time to visit North East India with kids. Families in Kolkata can also compare shorter options in weekend getaways from Kolkata with kids.

A simple Darjeeling trip plan

Sort the closed days first, then everything else fits around them.

  1. Arrival day: NJP or Bagdogra, prepaid taxi up, early dinner. No sightseeing.
  2. Toy train day: Joyride to Ghoom via Batasia Loop. Avoid Thursday if you want the zoo the same day.
  3. Zoo and HMI day: Any day except Thursday. The zoo opens at 8:30 AM.
  4. Tea estate and Peace Pagoda day: Tuesday to Saturday only for Happy Valley.
  5. Tiger Hill: The morning after a quiet evening.

Drop these into our family vacation itinerary template and adjust for your arrival day.

Sikkim side trip? Indian families do not need the Restricted Area Permit, which the Sikkim government page says is for foreign nationals only (Bhutanese citizens are exempt). The same page says a Protected Area Permit is needed by both Indian and foreign nationals for border or protected areas inside Sikkim, such as Nathula.
