Munich in December with kids

December in Munich is a market calendar, not a second version of the year-round city. The Munich with kids page already covers MVV, Kids' Kingdom and the Holiday Pass. This page is the 2026 dates, the early zoo close on Christmas Eve, and the museum days that are actually shut.

simply Munich, Hellabrunn and the Deutsches Museum were opened on 14 October 2026. Markets whose official pages still said "date to be announced" are omitted.

Marienplatz first, and not on 22 November

The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz runs 20 November to 24 December 2026. It is closed on 22 November. Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 21:00. Sunday 10:00 to 20:00. 24 December 10:00 to 14:00. More than 100 stalls. The tree carries about 3,975 LED lights.

Himmelswerkstatt inside the New Town Hall is the children's reason to go: a free hands-on programme for ages 6 to 12, run with Kindermuseum München. That is the indoor hour when the square is packed. The same page lists a Christkindltram of about 30 minutes from Sendlinger Tor, and a Krampus run on 13 December 2026. Book those as extras, not as the spine.

Go in daylight. A pushchair after 19:00 on a Saturday is a crowd, not a stroll. Eat before 24 December at 14:00, because the stalls close.

The 2026 overview also confirms Weihnachtsdorf 16 November to 22 December, Viktualienmarkt 20 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, Pink Christmas 20 November to 20 December, and the medieval market 20 to 23 December (closed 22 November). Use those. Skip any card that still says the date is coming.

Tollwood is the other free ground

Tollwood on Theresienwiese runs 24 November to 23 December 2026. Grounds and the Market of Ideas are free. A children's tent runs daily crafts. Monday to Friday it starts at 14:00. Saturday and Sunday from 11:00. The Market of Ideas closes at 22:00 on 23 December.

That afternoon start on weekdays is useful. School-age children can do a museum morning, then Tollwood. The New Year's Eve party on 31 December is a separate ticketed event. It is not a family market.

Zoo and museum clocks that change in December

Hellabrunn from 25 October 2026 is 09:00 to 17:00. On 24 and 31 December 2026 it is 09:00 to 16:00. Open 365 days. If Christmas Eve is your zoo day, start at 09:00 and be out by mid-afternoon.

Deutsches Museum stays 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, and then it vanishes: closed 24, 25 and 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. Open as usual on 26 December. Verkehrszentrum and Flugwerft Schleißheim follow the same holiday list. Kids' Kingdom hours on the year-round page still apply on the days the island is open. They do not apply on the closed days.

Munich Tourism's weather page is qualitative: December to February can fall below 0°C, December is busy, markets plus museums are the warm indoor retreat. It does not print a December average table. Dress for ice. Do not plan a long Englischer Garten picnic.

A December day that holds: Marienplatz in daylight, Himmelswerkstatt if you have a 6-to-12-year-old, Tollwood after 14:00 on a weekday, Hellabrunn on a morning that is not Christmas Eve. On 26 December, the Deutsches Museum is the indoor plan. On 24, 25 and 31 December, it is not. For the year-round city underneath the lights, stay on the with kids page.

24 December is a short Saturday

If your stay includes Christmas Eve, the usable window is morning. Marienplatz closes at 14:00. Hellabrunn closes at 16:00. The Deutsches Museum is shut. Tollwood has already ended (23 December). That is a zoo morning or a last look at the stalls, then home. Do not plan a late dinner on the square.

26 December is the opposite: the Deutsches Museum is open, the Christkindlmarkt is gone (it ended the 24th), Viktualienmarkt's winter stalls continue to 5 January 2027. Use the museum, not a square that has been packed up.

Krampus on 13 December 2026 is loud and crowded. It is a watch for older children, not a toddler outing. Himmelswerkstatt is the calmer indoor hour for ages 6 to 12 on any other market day.

MVV child tickets do not change in December. Under 6s still ride free. The year-round page has the Children's Day Ticket figure. This page will not reprint it. What changes is how early you leave the house, because 16:00 zoo closes and 14:00 market closes do not wait.
