Amsterdam in April with kids

Daytime maxima from Holland.com and the July to August contrast from I amsterdam, checked 15 October 2026.
MonthWeatherNotes
March9°C daytime maximumHolland.com spring table. No month has fewer than 13 rain days.
April14°C daytime maximumSnow still possible. I amsterdam calls the month notoriously rainy.
May17°C daytime maximumLate April to early May is the I amsterdam tulip window.
July and Augustabout 22°CI amsterdam summer average. Not an April figure.

14°C is the Holland.com April maximum, not a promise that King's Day will be dry. The Amsterdam with kids page already lists GVB child day tickets, ARTIS prices and the City Card gaps. This note is the spring thermometer those official pages actually printed, the 27 April standing date, and the 2027 tulip listings.

Holland.com, I amsterdam, Keukenhof and ARTIS were opened on 15 October 2026. I amsterdam's old weather URL returned 404, so no city-branded monthly table is invented here. Easter 2027 dates were not on those family pages, so they are omitted.

9°C, then 14°C, then 17°C

Holland.com's weather page prints spring daytime maxima of 9°C in March, 14°C in April and 17°C in May. No month has fewer than 13 rainfall days. Bring a raincoat. The same page notes the saying "April doet wat hij wil" and that a dusting of snow has arrived as late as April.

I amsterdam visitor information puts tulip bloom from late April to early May, and July and August at about 22°C. That is the summer contrast, not an April high. King's Day tips call April notoriously rainy and tell you to wear a raincoat or poncho and leave the umbrella at home, because you will not have room to hold it open in the street.

Pack layers and walking shoes for cobbles. Do not pack as if this were 22°C.

27 April is the standing date

I amsterdam says King's Day is held annually on 27 April for the king's birthday. If 27 April is a Sunday, the public holiday moves to Saturday 26. The live hub still titled the next edition Monday 27 April 2026 when this page was checked. 2027 is a Tuesday, so the standing 27 April date applies. The 2027 street map was not posted.

Treat it as an orange street day, not a museum itinerary. An older I amsterdam holiday-hours article still described 2025 and said some museums close while ARTIS and a short list stay open. That is last year's pattern, not a 2027 timetable. ARTIS's standing clock is daily 09:00 to 18:00. That is not a King's Day promise.

Under-11 GVB rules do not change on the 27th. Buy the child day ticket in advance. It is still presale only.

Tulips in the city, and Keukenhof outside it

The Tulp Festival is posted for April 2027, the 13th edition, at more than 100 public locations, "one tulip for every Amsterdammer, amounting to 800,000 tulips." That is a walk through planted beds, not a ticket desk.

Keukenhof is open 18 March to 9 May 2027, 08:00 to 19:00, last entry 18:15. It is in Lisse, not a tram hop from Dam Square. Budget the journey as its own day. Do not stack it after ARTIS.

A first April stay that holds: one wet-weather indoor morning at NEMO or ARTIS, one tulip walk if the 2027 festival is still listed, Keukenhof only if you accept the transfer. Put King's Day on the calendar only if you will actually be in the city on the 27th.

For December lights and the indoor backup, use Amsterdam in December. Fares stay on the year-round page.

What the 14°C is for

14°C is a jacket morning and a playground if the rain holds off. It is not a canal-swim month and it is not a reason to skip the raincoat. Holland.com will not give you fewer than 13 rain days in any month. I amsterdam will not give you the July 22°C in April.

If you only have two days, do not promise a child both Keukenhof and the 27 April street. Pick one outdoor set-piece and keep NEMO as the rain plan. The City Card still excludes Van Gogh and Anne Frank House. Those bookings do not become easier in April. They become harder if you also want the 27th on the street.

Bloemencorso Bollenstreek appeared on the I amsterdam Tulp Festival page as 17 April 2027. The parade operator homepage still showed a 2026 route when opened. This page names the festival and Keukenhof, not a parade clock the operator had not reprinted.

I amsterdam's public-holiday list, updated 14 October 2026, still printed 2025 only. Do not treat that leftover calendar as 2027. The standing 27 April rule is the date this page will use. If you need a school-holiday week, check the Dutch calendar the month you travel. That list was not on the family pages opened here, so it is omitted.

ARTIS-Micropia and the Groote Museum remain free for ages 0 to 12 on the year-round page. Those rooms do not become a King's Day plan. They become the dry hour if 14°C arrives with the 13th rain day Holland.com warned you about.

Questions

Is King's Day always 27 April?

Yes, unless 27 April is a Sunday, when the holiday moves to Saturday 26. I amsterdam still titled the next edition 27 April 2026 when this page was checked. 2027 is a Tuesday, so the standing date applies. The 2027 street map was not posted.

Can you do Keukenhof and ARTIS on the same day?

Keukenhof is in Lisse, open 18 March to 9 May 2027, last entry 18:15. ARTIS in the city is a separate ticket on a daily 09:00 to 18:00 clock. Treat them as two days.

What do official pages say to wear in April?

Holland.com says bring a raincoat in every season. I amsterdam adds layers, walking shoes for cobbles, and on King's Day a poncho rather than an umbrella.

Keep planning
