Istanbul with kids: things to do
| Place | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Miniatürk | Tue to Sun 10:00 to 18:00 | Monday closed. Ages 6 and under with family free. Summer Friday and Saturday late opening 26 June to 13 September. |
| Rahmi M. Koç Museum | Tue to Fri 09:30 to 17:30 | Sat and Sun 09:30 to 18:00. Monday closed. Closed 31 December and 1 January. |
| Topkapı Palace | Closed Tuesday | Under 6 free. Turkish and TRNC under 18 free. Buy on the day at the ticket office. |
| Metro Istanbul, under 6 | No electronic ticket | Everyone else must tap a card. Strollers use lifts, not escalators. |
Start on the Golden Horn, not in the palace queue. Miniatürk and the Rahmi M. Koç Museum sit on the same water. Both close on Monday. Both are built for children who would rather climb a model train than stand in a stone courtyard. Topkapı can wait until after lunch, and under 6s enter that palace free.
Istanbul with children is those two houses plus a metro rule: under 6s need no card, everyone else taps. Metro Istanbul, Miniatürk, Rahmi Koç, GoTürkiye and muze.gen.tr pages were opened on 14 October 2026. No official municipal zoo ticket page loaded, so the zoo is omitted. Hagia Sophia gallery prices on unofficial sites were not confirmed on the official 2026 mosque page, so those figures are omitted too.
Metro: tap, lift, no invented child fare
Travel rules are short. All passengers except children under 6 must use an electronic ticket or card and show it if asked. Strollers take the lift, not the escalator. Hold small hands on the moving stairs.
Fares on an anonymous İstanbulkart were 46.20 lira full, 22.55 student and 33.08 social when we checked. A single-use electronic ticket was 65 lira. The student rate is a named concession. It is not a visitor child fare. Do not tell a gate agent your 8-year-old is a student. Buy the full product unless they hold a qualifying card.
Ferries across the Horn are a separate ticket conversation from the metro. If you ride one to Hasköy, buy what that operator sells.
Miniatürk: the scale model morning
Miniatürk is Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00. Monday closed. From 26 June to 13 September, Friday and Saturday run 10:00 to 22:00. Children aged 6 and under with family enter free. That free ticket is issued only at the booth. Bring identification. The grounds cover 60,000 square metres, with 15,000 square metres of models, a playground and a tour train. Card or İstanbulkart only. Museum Pass is not valid.
The homepage showed 900 and 1,350 lira without labels. This page does not guess which is adult or child. Ask at the booth.
Walk the models. Use the playground. Leave. It is a morning, not a history degree.
Rahmi Koç: trains, a submarine, Monday shut
Hours and prices at the Rahmi M. Koç Museum in Hasköy: closed Monday; Tuesday to Friday 09:30 to 17:30; Saturday and Sunday 09:30 to 18:00. Last tickets 30 minutes before close. Closed on the eve and first day of religious holidays, and on 31 December and 1 January. The English page listed 1000 TL entry and 250 TL boat tours. It did not print a child fare. This page does not import one.
GoTürkiye is why families go: sit in a vintage car, ride a 1936 steam tug on summer weekends, board a 1944 US Navy submarine. That is the afternoon if Miniatürk was the morning. It is not a third museum on the historic peninsula.
Topkapı after the toys
muze.gen.tr : children below 6 enter free. Turkish and TRNC citizens under 18 enter free. Foreign students 12 to 24 get a discount with ISIC. Closed Tuesday. Combined tickets last one day. You cannot buy palace, Harem or Hagia Irene tickets online. The office is the only desk.
Go in with one courtyard in mind. Walk out. A toddler in a dense palace crush is a medical plan. If Tuesday is your only palace day, you do not have a palace day.
A first Istanbul stay that holds: Miniatürk and Rahmi Koç on a Tuesday-to-Sunday pair of days, Topkapı on a day it is open if you have an under-6 who still wants a palace, metro cards for everyone aged 6 and over. Adding the bazaar, two mosques and a Bosphorus dinner cruise on the same Saturday is how the city wins. For another city that prints under-6 transport rules in English, read Tokyo with kids.
Two shores, one nap
Miniatürk and Rahmi Koç are both on the Golden Horn. That is the point. You can do both in two mornings without crossing to the historic peninsula. Topkapı is the peninsula. Do not add the palace on the same legs as the submarine.
Monday shuts Miniatürk and Rahmi Koç. Tuesday shuts Topkapı. A Monday-Tuesday pair needs a park or a ferry, not a third museum you have not sourced. Gülhane Park sits by the palace and costs nothing. It is a sit-down, not a ticket.
Religious holiday eves close Rahmi Koç. 31 December and 1 January close it too. If your dates include those, the transport museum is not the plan. Miniatürk's summer late nights (Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 22:00, 26 June to 13 September) do not apply in winter. December visitors use the 18:00 close.
GoTürkiye also names the İstanbul Toy Museum and children's workshops at İstanbul Modern. Those are extras if you have a third day and have checked their own hours. They are not a substitute for the two Horn houses that published usable clocks.
