Plan Phoenix Park as the frame, not Dublin Castle. Visit Dublin calls the park the largest enclosed city park in Europe, and it says the castle is shut until the end of 2026. Dublin Zoo sits inside that park, takes about three hours on 28 hectares, and has no visitor car park. That is the outdoor day. The indoor day is a free National Museum site, with some of the old Dead Zoo now at Collins Barracks.

Under-5s ride Dublin Bus free with a paying adult. Ages 5 to 15 use a child Leap fare. The Ark, if you want a booked show, is listed for ages 2 to 12. Dublin Zoo, Dublin Bus, museum.ie and Visit Dublin were the sources opened on 13 October 2026.

Phoenix Park as the free frame

You do not pay to enter the park. You pay if you then enter the zoo. Use the park as the walk, the grass and the exit route. A family that treats the park as the destination and the zoo as optional still has a morning. A family that drives to the zoo will find no visitor car park and a wasted argument at the gate.

Dublin Castle is not a 2026 consolation prize. Visit Dublin is explicit: closed until the end of 2026. Cross it off. If someone in the group came for a castle, say so before you fly, and pick another city or another year.

Dublin Zoo without a visitor car park

October hours are 09:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 16:30. The site is closed on 25 and 26 December. A typical visit is about three hours. Under-3s enter free. Ages 3 to 15 pay 20 euros at the gate or 17 euros online. Adults pay 26.50 euros at the gate or 22.50 euros online. A family of 2 adults plus 2 children is 75 euros at the gate or 62.50 euros online. Anyone under 16 needs an adult.

Buy online. The online column is the cheaper column on every row above. Arrive by bus or on foot through the park. Be inside before 16:30 if you still want last entry. Three hours from a 14:00 arrival already bumps the close.

Eat with the time you have, then walk back out into the park. The zoo is the paid enclosure. The park is the free remainder. Do not invent a second paid attraction for the same afternoon.

Four free museum sites, one of them moved

All four National Museum of Ireland sites are free. Families do not book. Staff may refuse an unsupervised visitor under 18, so keep an adult with the group. Family tours start from age 6.

Collins Barracks hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00, Sunday and Monday 13:00 to 17:00. Closed 25 and 26 December and Good Friday. That Sunday and Monday start at 13:00 is the clock that catches people who assume a 10:00 city-museum open.

If rain starts at lunch

Leave the park at midday and go to Collins Barracks for 13:00 if it is Sunday or Monday, or for the rest of the afternoon if it is Tuesday to Saturday. Visit Dublin says the Natural History Museum on Merrion Street is closed, and that some of the Dead Zoo collection now sits at Collins Barracks. You are not failing the children by skipping Merrion Street. That building is not receiving you.

Kildare Street and the other free sites remain available on the same no-booking rule. Pick one building. Free does not mean you should tour four.

Leap fares for ages 5 to 15

Dublin Bus carries under-5s free with a paying adult. In a busy period that child may not take a seat. Ages 5 to 15 pay a child Leap fare of 0.65 euros for 90 minutes, or 0.90 euros cash. Caps are 1.95 euros a day and 7.80 euros a week.

Load Leap before you need the zoo bus. Cash at 0.90 euros is the worse rate. A child who rides to the park, rides back, and rides once more in the evening is already near the 1.95-euro daily cap, which is the point of the cap.

Adults pay adult fares, which are not listed here because the child page was the source for this section. Use the adult fare page when you tap for yourself.

The Ark if you need a booked show

Visit Dublin lists The Ark for ages 2 to 12. That is a performance or workshop venue, not a walk-in playground. If the weather is poor and Collins Barracks has already been used, look at The Ark's own programme and age label for the date you hold. The 2-to-12 band is the tourism-site band, not a promise that every show suits a two-year-old.

Dublin with children in 2026 is a park, a zoo you reach without a car, and a free barracks museum that now holds part of the Dead Zoo. The castle can wait for 2027. The family that accepts that calendar has a city that still works.

Questions

Is there parking at Dublin Zoo?

No. Dublin Zoo says there is no visitor car park. Use the bus (child Leap 0.65 euros for 90 minutes for ages 5 to 15) or walk through Phoenix Park. Under-5s ride free with a paying adult.

Can you visit Dublin Castle with children in 2026?

Visit Dublin says Dublin Castle is closed until the end of 2026. Do not put it on a 2026 itinerary. Use Phoenix Park, the zoo, or a free National Museum site instead.

Where is the Dead Zoo if Merrion Street is closed?

The Natural History Museum on Merrion Street is closed. Visit Dublin says some of that Dead Zoo collection is now at Collins Barracks, which is one of the four free National Museum sites.

What does a child Leap fare cost?

Ages 5 to 15 pay 0.65 euros for 90 minutes on Leap, or 0.90 euros cash. Caps are 1.95 euros a day and 7.80 euros a week. Under-5s travel free with a paying adult but may not take a seat when the bus is busy.
