  7. Cologne with kids: things to do

By Ramya ChinnaduraiPublished 13 October 2026Updated 13 October 2026

Family prices from KVB, Cologne Tourism, the Chocolate Museum and the Romano-Germanic Museum, checked 13 October 2026.

TicketPriceNotes
KVB Preisstufe 1b, child 6 to 141.80 euros90 minutes. Under 6s and 6-year-olds not yet at school free in second class. Age 15 and over 4.00 euros.
KölnCard, single9 euros for 24 hours, 18 euros for 48 hoursGroup max 5: 19 euros / 38 euros. City buses, trams, S-Bahn and regional trains, second class, from first validation.
Chocolate Museum, child and pupil to 1810 euros weekday, 11.50 euros weekendUnder 6s free. Family 2 adults plus own children to 18: 35 / 38 euros. Last entry 1 hour before close.
Romano-Germanic Museum, under 18FreeAdult 6 euros, reduced 3.50 euros. Belgian House, Cäcilienstraße 46. Closed Tuesday. Mosaic and tomb on Roncalliplatz closed.
Cologne Zoo, child (tourism list)11.00 eurosAdult listed at 29.50 euros. Online prices are dynamic. Opened 1860. More than 10,000 animals. U18 Zoo/Flora.

Check the Chocolate Museum Monday list before you promise anyone the Lindt fountain. Production stops about 30 minutes before closing, last entry is 1 hour before closing, and whole Mondays vanish in late winter, in November, and on 2, 9 and 16 November 2026. That calendar is the spine of a Cologne family day. KVB, the KölnCard, the Romano-Germanic Museum and Cologne Tourism supplied the rest. Those pages were opened on 13 October 2026.

KVB singles and when the KölnCard wins

KVB's EinzelTicket page sends under 6s, and 6-year-olds who are not yet at school, through second class for nothing. A child aged 6 to 14 pays 1.80 euros on Preisstufe 1b. From 15 the same ticket was 4.00 euros. Validity is 90 minutes.

If you will hop cathedral, river and zoo in one stretch, 90 minutes is tight. That is the moment to look at the KölnCard: 9 euros for 24 hours or 18 euros for 48 hours as a single. A group card for a maximum of 5 people is 19 euros for 24 hours or 38 euros for 48 hours. From the first validation it covers city buses, trams, S-Bahn and regional trains in second class.

A group at the maximum of 5 should price the 19 euro group card against a pile of 4.00 euro and 1.80 euro singles. One adult and a preschooler who rides free may only need a 4.00 euro ticket for a single hop. Do the arithmetic for the actual ages, not for a generic "family pass".

The fountain, the weekday price, and who may go in alone

The Chocolate Museum is open daily 10:00 to 18:00 when it is open at all. Last entry is 1 hour before closing. The production line winds down about 30 minutes before closing, so a late afternoon ticket can miss the part children came for. Under 6s are free. Child and pupil tickets to age 18 were 10 euros on a weekday and 11.50 euros at the weekend. The family ticket (2 adults plus their own children to 18) was 35 euros on a weekday and 38 euros at the weekend.

Tours start from preschool age. Courses start from age 8. Visitors aged 12 and over may visit alone. The fountain holds 200 kg of Lindt. That is the exhibit people photograph. It is not a tasting counter you lean a toddler against for the whole visit.

Closed Mondays: January through the end of March, all of November, and Monday 2, 9 and 16 November 2026. If your only indoor plan is this building, check the month.

Roman stones at the Belgian House, not on Roncalliplatz

The Romano-Germanic Museum is at the Belgian House, Cäcilienstraße 46. Hours: Wednesday to Monday 10:00 to 18:00, closed Tuesday, first Thursday of the month until 22:00. Adults 6 euros, reduced 3.50 euros, under 18s free.

The Dionysos mosaic and the Poblicius tomb on Roncalliplatz are closed. Do not walk children to the cathedral square for those two objects. They are not on display there. The Belgian House is the current address.

Under 18s at 0 euros makes this the cheap indoor hour after the chocolate line. It is also closed Tuesday, so a Tuesday plan needs the museum or the zoo, not both as backups for each other.

The zoo list is a board list

Cologne Tourism's zoo page lists 29.50 euros for adults and 11.00 euros for children. The zoo opened in 1860, holds more than 10,000 animals, and sits at U18 Zoo/Flora. The same page says online prices are dynamic. Treat 29.50 and 11.00 as the tourism board list, not a locked door price. Confirm on the zoo's own till or web shop the morning you go.

Flora is next door on that U18 stop. This page does not invent a Flora ticket, because the tourism listing we used is the zoo listing.

Finkens Garten when you want grass, not a queue

Finkens Garten in Rodenkirchen is 5 hectares, written for preschool ages, open daily from 09:00 to sunset, free, and it does not allow dogs. Trams 16 and 17 go there.

That is the reset after the fountain or the zoo. It is not in the old town. Budget the tram, then stay until sunset if the weather holds. No dogs means you leave the family spaniel at the hotel.

A first visit that stays honest: KVB or a KölnCard from the first validation, Chocolate Museum only on a day it is open and early enough to see production, RGM at Cäcilienstraße 46 if you want a free under-18 hall, zoo only after you re-check the dynamic price, Finkens Garten when someone needs 5 hectares and no ticket. Pair the museum with the garden. Adding the zoo after last entry is how you miss the production line.

Questions

Do children pay on KVB in Cologne?

Under 6s, and 6-year-olds who are not yet at school, travel free in second class. Ages 6 to 14 pay 1.80 euros on Preisstufe 1b for 90 minutes. From 15 the fare was listed at 4.00 euros.

Is the Chocolate Museum open on Mondays?

Not in January through the end of March, and not in November. It is also closed on Monday 2, 9 and 16 November 2026. Usual hours are 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 1 hour before closing, production ending about 30 minutes before closing. Under 6s are free.

Where is the Romano-Germanic Museum now?

At the Belgian House, Cäcilienstraße 46. Wednesday to Monday 10:00 to 18:00, closed Tuesday, first Thursday to 22:00. Under 18s free, adults 6 euros, reduced 3.50 euros. Do not go to Roncalliplatz for the Dionysos mosaic or the Poblicius tomb: those displays are closed.

Can you trust the zoo price on the tourism site?

Treat 29.50 euros adult and 11.00 euros child as the tourism board list, not a locked door price. Cologne Tourism says online prices are dynamic. The zoo opened in 1860, holds more than 10,000 animals, and is at U18 Zoo/Flora.
