Weekend getaways from Kolkata with kids

For a one or two night family trip from Kolkata, the easiest picks are Digha or Bakkhali for the sea, Shantiniketan or Bishnupur for culture you can walk around, Jhargram for forest and a short train ride, and Mayapur for temples by the river. The Sundarbans is the most memorable of the lot, but it is a boat trip that needs permits, so it suits kids who can sit still on water for a few hours.

Every distance and rule below comes from an official district, forest, university or ASI page, checked on 1 November 2026. Rules change, so confirm before you go.

1. Digha: the classic beach weekend

The Purba Medinipur district page puts Digha about 187 km from Calcutta, with a shallow sand beach that runs 7 km and gentle waves. You can watch both sunrise and sunset from the same beach.

The district lists frequent local and express trains from Howrah to Digha railway station, buses from Esplanade, Howrah and Belgharia, and a road route via NH-6 to Kolaghat and then NH-41.

With kids: The district calls the sea calm and shallow for about a mile from the beach. Good for wading, but still hold small hands and follow local advice on the day.

2. Bakkhali and Frasergunj: quieter sand, with a ferry

South 24 Parganas describes Bakkhali and Frasergunj as a white sand beach on the western edge of the Sundarbans, 132 km by road from Kolkata. The route it gives is a 3 hour bus ride to Namkhana, then a ferry across the Hatania-Doania river that takes about an hour to reach Bakkhali.

With kids: The ferry is half the fun, but it adds an hour you cannot shorten. Keep snacks and a change of clothes within reach, not in the boot. Our family weekend packing list helps.

3. Sundarbans: mangroves by boat

The Sundarban Tiger Reserve site is clear that waterways are the only way to visit and that October to March is the best season. Permission to enter the reserve comes from the Office of the Field Director, Sundarban Tiger Reserve, Canning, on payment of entry, boat, camera and other charges. Most tourists go on conducted tours by private operators or the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation, per the same page. The district page adds that private vessels leave from Canning, Basanti and Gosaba.

The reserve's rules page says swimming is prohibited inside the reserve, loud music is not allowed, and plastic bottles and single use plastic are banned.

With kids: Expect long, quiet stretches on the boat. Carry refillable steel bottles, since plastic bottles are not allowed. Entry and boat fees were not listed on the official pages we read, so confirm them before you pay.

4. Shantiniketan: open spaces and Tagore's home

Birbhum district says Bolpur, which includes Shantiniketan, is 150 km north of Kolkata and well linked to Kolkata and Howrah by train. The district's how to reach page lists Bolpur Shantiniketan as the station.

The key timing to know: a Visva-Bharati notice dated 24 June 2025 says that from 2 July 2025, the Uttarayan Complex and Rabindra Bhavana stay open Friday to Wednesday and close only on Thursdays. Older travel sites still say Wednesday. We found no official hours or ticket prices, so check on arrival.

With kids: Avoid Thursday if the museum matters. The district also lists Amkhoi Fossil Park and Khowai near Bolpur for kids who tire of museums.

5. Bishnupur: terracotta temples and stories

Bishnupur is in Bankura district and has its own railway station. The Bankura district page says trains from Kolkata run on a regular basis, and lists the Rasmancha (built in 1600 AD), Shyam Rai temple (1643) and Jorbangla temple (1655) among many others.

The ASI Kolkata Circle lists Rashmancha, Shyam Rai Temple and Jore-Bungla as ticketed monuments. ASI's own FAQ says only persons above the age of fifteen need to pay an entrance fee. Tickets are sold at counters, online, or by scanning a QR code at the site. We found no current Bishnupur price on an ASI page.

With kids: The Rashmancha page lists toilets, drinking water, benches and a wheelchair on site. Turn the terracotta panels into a game of spot the horse or the boat.

6. Mayapur: riverside temples, easy pace

Nadia district puts Mayapur 130 km north of Kolkata, on the Ganges where it meets the Jalangi, and home to the ISKCON headquarters. Mayapur has no railway station. The Mayapur page says to take a train from Howrah through Nabadwip Dham, about 30 km away, then a taxi. The district's how to reach page instead names Nabadwip Ghat station and a boat crossing to Nabadwip, and mentions special buses from Kolkata straight to Mayapur ISKCON. The two pages differ, so pick one route and confirm it locally.

With kids: Temple visits are short and can fit around a nap. The district page says more than a million pilgrims visit each year, so avoid festival dates if crowds wear your kids out.

7. Jhargram: forest, a temple by the river, a short train ride

The Jhargram district site gives 154 km by train, 178 km by road, a fastest train time of about 2 hours 24 minutes, and about 4 hours by car via NH6. Its tourism page rounds this to about 180 km.

The Kanak Durga Temple is about 14 km from Jhargram town, in forest beside the Dulung River, with birds and monkeys and migratory birds in winter.

With kids: A short train ride makes this a gentle first overnight trip with a toddler. Keep food bags closed near the monkeys. For the night, see toddler sleep in a hotel room.
