Best time to visit North East India with kids

The best time to visit North East India with kids is, in our editorial view, the drier months before the monsoon, and the permit you need depends on the state. This guide gives what IMD and the state governments state about monsoon timing and Inner Line Permits, and marks clearly where we are offering our own view.

Sourced 22 October 2026. We read each official page linked below on 22 October 2026. IMD gives no best-time advice for the North East, so the timing view here is ours, built on the monsoon dates IMD publishes. Permit rules change, so confirm on the state portal before you book.

What IMD says about monsoon timing

IMD's 24 May 2025 release says that normally the southwest monsoon sets in over Kerala on 1 June and advances over most parts of north east India by 5 June. In 2025 it set in over Kerala 8 days before its normal date and over Mizoram, in the north east, 12 days before the normal date (IMD press release, sourced 22 October 2026).

IMD's bulletin of 2 June 2026 said the monsoon was likely to set in over Kerala around 4 June 2026 (IMD bulletin, sourced 22 October 2026). That was a forecast in the bulletin, and we did not confirm the actual date.

So the dates move from year to year, and the monsoon can reach the North East well before 5 June. We could not confirm IMD's withdrawal dates on an official page, so we state none.

Our view: when to go, and why this is editorial

IMD publishes the arrival of the monsoon, not a best time to travel. Our editorial reading, and not an IMD claim, is that October to April is the drier stretch to plan around, with the months before the monsoon's normal arrival in early June the safer part of it. The October start is our judgement, because we could not confirm the withdrawal dates. Treat it as a planning habit and check the forecast for your dates.

For a family, the reasoning is practical. Heavy rain makes long road journeys slower and harder with small children, so we would not book a tight itinerary in the monsoon months. Your own kids' ages and the route matter more than a single date.

Inner Line Permits for Indian citizens

Several North Eastern states ask Indian visitors to hold an Inner Line Permit. One row per state we confirmed, from the linked page, read on 22 October 2026.

StateWhat the official page saysSource
Arunachal PradeshApply online through the eILP portal at eilp.arunachal.gov.in. A tourist eILP is for a stay of up to 14 days. An individual eILP is not required for those below 14 years of age, who must be accompanied by an adult. Tourist facilitation centres are listed at Naharlagun and Gumto railway stations, Guwahati (Asom Paryatan Bhawan and LGBI Airport) and Donyi Polo Airport, ItanagarArunachal Tourism, ILP, sourced 22 October 2026
NagalandApply at ilp.nagaland.gov.in. A domestic tourist pays a fee per person, valid for 30 days, and online payment gateway charges may apply. We give no amount here, so read it on the portal. Tourists need no guarantor but must give a local contactNagaland ILP FAQ, sourced 22 October 2026
ManipurThe ILP is for Indian citizens and is applied for at manipurilponline.mn.gov.in. The tourism page does not list the fee, validity, documents or child rules, and gives the Directorate of Tourism's contact details for themGovernment of Manipur, Official Website for Inner Line Permit (ILP), sourced 22 October 2026

Notes on the permits

The Arunachal page does not say whether a child under 14 is listed on an adult's permit, so ask before you travel. Nagaland's page states the fee per person and the 30-day validity. We left out Mizoram because its official page would not load for us, and we found no child rules for Nagaland or Manipur.

Check the permit step before you buy flights, and apply for every adult. The Arunachal page offers on-arrival help at the places it lists, but do not count on it for your route without checking.

Hornbill Festival dates

The Nagaland Department of Tourism's event calendar lists the Hornbill Festival for 1st to 10th December at Kisama, Kohima (Nagaland tourism event calendar, sourced 22 October 2026). The calendar does not show a year, so confirm the dates for the year you travel. Book early if you plan to go, because we did not confirm availability or entry rules.

We did not verify the dates of other North Eastern festivals, so we list none.

What we left out

We left out Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura permit and entry rules, any Manipur fee or validity, the Hornbill Music Festival, other festival dates, and a vaccine requirement one tourism page mentions, which we could not confirm. We also left out Protected Area Permit details, which apply to foreign nationals.
