One day trips from Chennai with kids
For a day trip from Chennai with kids, Mahabalipuram is the one with a stated child entry rule, since the ASI page says children below 15 years enter free. This guide gives the distances, hours and child rules that district, Archaeological Survey of India and Puducherry government pages state for five places, and says which popular places we could not confirm.
Sourced 25 October 2026. We read each official page linked below on 25 October 2026. Distances are as the pages give them, from the starting point each page names, and we give no travel time of our own. Hours and fees change, so confirm before you go.

How to choose a day trip with kids
- Check what the distance is measured from. The pages measure from the airport, the railhead or the city of Chennai, and they differ.
- The child ticket. Only the Mahabalipuram page states a child entry rule, and it is a free entry for children below 15 years.
- Season. Vedanthangal and Pulicat are bird places, and their pages name October to March as the bird season.
- Temple hours. Kanchipuram temples close at midday and reopen in the afternoon, so plan a break.

Day trips from Chennai: distances, hours and child rules from official pages
One row per place. Every fact comes from the linked page, read on 25 October 2026.
| Place | Official facts | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) | The district page lists 52 km from Chennai airport, 60 km from the nearest railhead at Chennai, and 22 km from Chengalpattu, and says Mamallapuram is connected with Chennai by the East Coast Road (ECR) and the old Mahabalipuram Road, and gives no city-centre figure. The ASI page says the monuments are open from 6 am to 6 pm and that children below 15 years enter free | Chengalpattu district, Mamallapuram, ASI, Mahabalipuram, sourced 25 October 2026 |
| Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary | The district page gives 65 km from Chennai airport and 25 km from Chengalpattu, and gives no city-centre figure. It says the best season is between October and March in one line and November to March in another. Birds can be viewed from the bank or from the watch tower. Buses run from Chennai, Tambaram and Chengalpattu. The page gives no hours and no fee | Chengalpattu district, Vedanthangal, sourced 25 October 2026 |
| Kanchipuram temples | The district tourism page says Kanchipuram is 75 km from Chennai, and gives bus services from Kanchi to Chennai. The Kailasanathar temple, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, is open 6:30 am to 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The Ekambareswarar and Varadharaja Perumal temples are open 6:00 am to 12:30 pm in the morning, and in the evening 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm for Ekambareswarar and 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm for Varadharaja Perumal. The page gives no child entry rule | Kancheepuram district, places of interest, how to reach, sourced 25 October 2026 |
| Pulicat | The Tiruvallur district page gives almost 60 km north of Chennai in one paragraph and 55 km in another. It says birds shelter at Pulicat Lake almost every year between October and March, with flamingos significant, and lists the Dutch fort history, the lighthouse and the Dutch cemetery protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The nearest railway station is Ponneri, with local trains from Chennai Central, and the page says buses are frequent. It gives no hours and no fee | Tiruvallur district, Pulicat, sourced 25 October 2026 |
| Puducherry | The Government of Puducherry tourism page says the closest airport is in Chennai, around 135 km from Puducherry, an approximate 2 and a half hour journey on the page's own estimate. It says October and November bring about half the annual rainfall and, rarely, days of rain or a cyclone. It gives no hours or fees. That is a long day with children, so our view, not an official one, is to treat it as a stay rather than a day trip | Government of Puducherry, tourism, sourced 25 October 2026 |
Timing the day from what the pages say
- Mahabalipuram. The ASI page gives 6 am to 6 pm, so an early start fits the whole window.
- Vedanthangal and Pulicat. Both pages name October to March for the birds, so a visit outside those months may show few.
- Kanchipuram. The temple timings above leave a gap from about 12:30 pm to the afternoon reopening, which is a natural lunch and rest stop.
- Puducherry. The page says October and November bring about half the year's rain, so check the forecast for those months.
Notes on the table
The Pulicat page gives two different distances, 60 km and 55 km, so we show both. The Vedanthangal page gives two different best-season spans, so we show both. The Kanchipuram page says the airport is a 2 hour drive away; we repeat that only as the page's own statement.

Places we could not confirm
We could not confirm these on an official page on 25 October 2026, so we say nothing about their hours, fees or child rules: Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur, whose official site blocked our request, DakshinaChitra, the Madras Crocodile Bank, Gingee Fort, and the Tamil Nadu Tourism pages, which did not load for us. We found no official page that gave a distance from Chennai city centre for any place above, so we give distances only from the starting points the pages name.

What we left out
We left out a ranking of the places, drive times that no official page states, restaurant and parking advice, and any fee that an official page we read does not state.
