Tatkal ticket booking for families: rules and tips

To book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website or app, the account must be authenticated with Aadhaar, and for a family trip that is the first thing to sort out. This guide gives what the Ministry of Railways press releases and the IRCTC app guide state, including the agent booking window, and the IRCTC Terms and conditions, and says plainly which Tatkal details we could not confirm on an official page.

Sourced 25 October 2026. We read each official page and each IRCTC PDF linked below on 25 October 2026. Railway rules change often, so confirm on the IRCTC site or app before you plan.

What the agent window tells you

IRCTC's Terms and conditions (PDF) say Tatkal opening day is one day in advance of the date the train departs from its originating station, and that Tatkal booking commences at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes. The PIB release describes the first 30 minutes of those windows, when authorised agents cannot book. Check your train on the IRCTC website or app before you book.

The same IRCTC page says a maximum of four passengers per PNR can be booked on a Tatkal e-ticket and that Tatkal charges per passenger are in addition to the normal ticket. It does not give the charges in rupees here.

The IRCTC Rail Connect app guide gives these steps for the account holder. The guide says the document is subject to change.

  • Open the right screen. Log in to the IRCTC Rail Connect app and open Authenticate User under Account on the dashboard.
  • Choose the type. Select Aadhaar Card or VID as the authentication type.
  • Check the profile. The form fills in the name, date of birth and gender from the IRCTC profile. The guide says these must match the latest e-Aadhaar.
  • Enter the number. Enter the Aadhaar number or VID for the same user and submit.
  • Confirm with the OTP. UIDAI sends an OTP to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Enter it to finish.
  • Look for the green tick. An authenticated account shows a green tick next to the name on the Account page.

If the profile details do not match your e-Aadhaar, the guide says you can edit the name, date of birth and gender only until the profile is authenticated, from My Profile under Account.

A family checklist before Tatkal day

  • Authenticate early. Link Aadhaar on the account you will book from before the day, since the rule applies to the account holder booking online.
  • Match the profile to e-Aadhaar. A mismatch is the one problem the app guide describes, and it can only be fixed before authentication.
  • Keep the Aadhaar mobile to hand. The OTP goes to the number registered with Aadhaar.
  • Plan around the agent window. If you book through an agent, the release says opening-day Tatkal bookings by agents are barred for the first 30 minutes.
  • Work out the regular booking date. The advance reservation period for general booking is 60 days, excluding the date of journey, under Railway Board Commercial Circular No. 10 of 2024. The train ticket booking date calculator shows the day for your journey date.
  • Have a plain booking as the fallback. Our view, not an official statement: check availability for the same train on the regular booking dates and decide in advance whether you will accept it.

What we could not confirm

We could not read these on an official page on 25 October 2026, so we state none of them: the Tatkal charges in rupees, child fares and whether a child needs a ticket, Tatkal refund and cancellation rules, and the basics of Premium Tatkal pricing. The indianrail.gov.in Tatkal page loaded as menus only, and the IRCTC help pages did not load for us. The IRCTC Terms and conditions PDF is the source for the opening day, times and passenger limit above.

Check these on the IRCTC website or app and on the official Indian Railways pages before you book. Every figure on a third-party site, including ones that look familiar, should be checked there.

What we left out

We left out booking tricks, any timing or charge that an official page we read does not state, and advice on third-party booking apps.
