Getting to Hampi
From Karnataka Tourism (updated 4 November 2026):
- Road: "6 hours from Bengaluru via NH48/NH50".
- Train: "Hosapete Junction (HPT) is just 13 km away (well-connected)". Check when booking opens with our train booking date calculator.
- Air: "Jindal Vijayanagar Airport (Vidyanagar) is the closest (40 mins); Hubballi Airport is an alternative".
Incredible India lists three airports: Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru, Jindal Vijayanagar Airport (VDY) in Vidyanagar and Hubballi Airport (HBX). Hampi is in Vijayanagara district.
Karnataka Tourism adds two rules: "Hampi is a strict plastic-free zone; carry reusable water bottles", and "Hotels in Hosapete and Hampi fill up months in advance".
Hours and tickets
The ASI Hampi page says the monuments are "Open from sunrise to sunset". Children below 15 enter free. The ticket covers the ticketed group as sold at the gate. For the fee for your group, use our ASI monument ticket finder. ASI's Hampi page prints Rs 40 per head on a line for the SAARC countries, listed by name, and BIMSTEC countries, and Rs 600 for other foreign visitors. It has no separate line for Indian citizens. Other ASI World Heritage pages, such as Agra Fort's, put Indian citizens on the same line as SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors, so our finder uses Rs 40 for Indians.
What to see
ASI says the monuments were built between AD 1336 and 1570, and it names Krishnadeva Raya (AD 1509 to 30) among the rulers.
Virupaksha Temple
Incredible India traces it "From humble origins as a modest shrine in the 7th century", with an entrance tower that "rises to a majestic 50 meters". The district site calls it "the only temple here that is still used", and ASI says it is "now in worship".
Vijaya Vittala Temple and the Stone Chariot
The district site calls it "Hampi's crowning glory, with a magnificent stone chariot". Incredible India describes the temple's musical pillars, carved to echo "81 different musical instruments". Purandara Mandapam lies "To the west of the Vittala temple".
The royal centre
- The Queen's Bath, the Elephant Stables and the Hazara Rama Temple (Incredible India).
- The Zenana enclosure (ASI) and the Lotus Mahal, or Kamal Mahal, on "two levels" (district site).
- The Mahanavami Dibba (district site) and the mint (Incredible India).
Hills, statues and the river
- Hemakuta Hill and the Achyutaraya Temple (Incredible India).
- Matanga Parvata, "the highest hill range visible to the east of the Therubeedi of Virupaksha temple" (district site).
- Ugranarasimha, a "6.7 meters high monolith" (district site).
- The Archaeological Museum, coracle rides on the Tungabhadra, Anegundi across the river, and bouldering (Incredible India). We found no official fares for coracles.
