Aadhaar card, PAN card work for a train e-ticket

Indian adult, checked 5 Nov 2026

  • Aadhaar card: Accepted
  • PAN card: Accepted
  • One passenger on each e-ticket must show an ID: the rule is per ticket, not per passenger.
  • Carry the ID in original. m-Aadhaar counts only when shown in the m-Aadhaar app after entering the password.
  • DigiLocker counts only for Aadhaar or a driving licence shown from "Issued Documents". Documents you uploaded yourself do not count.

Source line: Valid only if one of the passengers booked on an e-ticket presents any of the 12 listed cards, from a passport and Voter ID to Aadhaar, e-Aadhaar, m-Aadhaar in the app and Aadhaar or a driving licence from DigiLocker "Issued Documents". Rules as printed by IRCTC Terms and Conditions, page 11 (28 Aug 2025), checked 5 Nov 2026.

Rules as printed by IRCTC, Alliance Air (BCAS list), the Embassy of India Kathmandu, the Embassy of India Thimphu, LAHDC Leh, Andaman and Nicobar Tourism and Corbett Tiger Reserve, checked 5 Nov 2026. This is a guide, not an approval: the TTE, airport security, the border post or the forest gate decides on the day. Carry originals.

Pick the journey, say who is travelling and tick the IDs you hold. See which ones the rule accepts, which it rejects and which it does not list, with the source line for each. No account, and nothing leaves your browser.

Every rule in the checker

These are the IDs each source names for an Indian adult, read on 5 November 2026. An ID that a source does not name shows as "not listed": ask before you rely on it. Only the Embassy of India in Kathmandu names IDs that are not valid.

Children and infants

  • Train, reserved e-ticket (IRCTC): IRCTC asks for one ID per e-ticket, so a child on the same ticket as an adult who shows a listed ID needs none of their own.
  • Domestic flight (BCAS list): "Identity proof/Date of Birth certificate is required in respect of Infant/Minor, when accompanied by their parents / guardian. However, an unaccompanied minor must carry a valid identity proof as listed above."
  • India to Nepal, flying: A minor's Emergency Travel ID needs a birth certificate plus a parent's passport or Voter ID, per the Embassy's consular services page. Age exceptions for children were reported in 2019, but they are not on the Embassy page.
  • Bhutan: "For minor children (below 18 years of age), if not having Passport, the Birth Certificate in original is required."
  • Ladakh registration (LAHDC Leh): The portal states no ID rule for children. Additional tourists in a group registration give a name and age.
  • Andaman, Baratang forest permit: The page states no ID rule for children.
  • Corbett safari or night stay: The portal states no ID rule for children.

What we left out

We left out hotels, ASI monuments, state bus services and Vande Bharat trains, because we found no official ID rule for Indian citizens on any page we opened. International trips need a passport: check entry rules with the visa-free finder and your photo with the passport photo size checker. We could not open the BCAS circular itself or the IndiGo and Air India ID pages, and we could not confirm whether airport security accepts an e-Aadhaar print or DigiLocker.
