Ula vs ChatGPT
Hey Ula vs ChatGPT for Family Trip Planning
Choose ChatGPT if you want one flexible assistant for everything, you enjoy writing detailed prompts, and you are happy to check prices and book yourself. Choose Hey Ula if you plan family weekends often, you want your kids' ages, stroller, walking pace, breakfast needs and budget cap remembered without repeating them, and you would rather get three real options than a long list. Hey Ula is in Beta with a waitlist at heyula.ai. We build Hey Ula, so we will be clear about where ChatGPT is the better choice.
Updated 12 October 2026. ChatGPT features are taken from OpenAI and Expedia pages linked below. Sample trip costs are examples, not quotes.
Plenty of parents have already tried ChatGPT for a trip. It is a good place to start. The honest question is not "which is better?" but "which one fits the way your family plans?"
What each one is
ChatGPT is a general AI assistant from OpenAI. It can help with almost anything, including travel. For trips, it can brainstorm, draft day-by-day plans, compare neighbourhoods and explain trade-offs. With Memory switched on, it can remember relevant details from past chats. Through apps from Expedia and Booking.com, it can show live listings inside the conversation, and then send you to the partner's site to book (Expedia in ChatGPT).
Hey Ula is your AI travel companion. She focuses on weekend trips and family getaways. Ula keeps your family's Travel DNA: kids' ages, stroller, walking pace, breakfast needs and budget cap. You tell her what you want ("free Saturday, lake, back by bedtime") and she comes back with three real options. She is built to plan and book trips, and to book only after you say yes. Hey Ula is in Beta (early access). Join the waitlist at heyula.ai. For the background on the idea, read what an agentic travel agent is.

Memory: who remembers the kids?
This is the biggest practical difference for families.
ChatGPT's Memory can remember preferences you share and use them later. OpenAI's help page explains that you can review what it remembers, correct it or delete it, and that Memory does not keep every detail from every conversation (Memory in ChatGPT). That is sensible for a general assistant, but it means your trip details compete with everything else you use ChatGPT for, from work emails to recipes.
Hey Ula is designed around one memory: how your family travels. You tell Ula once that your daughter is three, that you bring a stroller, that a 20-minute walk is the limit and that breakfast has to be included. The next ten trips start from there, not from a blank chat.
Choose ChatGPT if you want one memory for your whole life and you are happy to restate trip details when needed.
Choose Hey Ula if you want travel details kept separately, front and centre, every time.
Prices: estimates vs real options
Plain chat answers in any AI can contain prices that are out of date. ChatGPT gets much better when you use the Expedia or Booking.com apps, because those show live listings. You still need to add up the full cost yourself: room, breakfast, train, parking, the thing the kids will definitely want.
Ula is built to suggest options you could actually take and to judge them against your budget cap, so a trip that blows the cap is not one of the three. During Beta, confirm the final total before paying.
Choose ChatGPT if you like to explore lots of listings and compare them yourself.
Choose Hey Ula if you want fewer, better options that already respect your budget.
Booking: who presses the button?
With ChatGPT, you browse in the chat and then click through to Expedia or Booking.com to finish. That is clear and safe, and it means you deal with the booking site directly.
Hey Ula is built so that Ula books only after you say yes. Nothing is booked without your approval. During Beta, waitlist families should still expect to confirm the booking themselves until booking is live for them.
Choose ChatGPT if you want to see and complete every booking on the partner's own site.
Choose Hey Ula if you want a travel companion that is built to handle the booking after you approve it.
Privacy: what to check
Both tools ask you to share family details, so check the controls.
- In ChatGPT, you can review and delete memories in Settings, use a temporary chat that does not create memories, and choose whether your chats are used to improve models.
- For Hey Ula, read the privacy policy at heyula.ai to see how Travel DNA and messages are processed.
Whichever you use, never share card numbers, passwords or passport numbers in a chat.
A worked example
Here is the same request sent to both, written the way a tired parent would type it:
Free this Saturday and Sunday. Two adults, a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old. We have a stroller. Somewhere with a lake, under two hours by train, breakfast included, total under 400.
In ChatGPT, you will usually get a solid plan with a few destination ideas, a rough schedule and price estimates. To make it better, you add follow-ups: "Which of these has step-free stations?", "Can you check family rooms with breakfast?" If the Booking.com or Expedia app is connected and available in your region, you can look at live listings and then book on their site.
With Ula, most of that brief is already in your Travel DNA, so you could write "Free this weekend, lake, under two hours." Ula is built to come back with three options that fit the 3-year-old's pace, include breakfast and stay under your cap, and to ask before booking anything.
Our verdict
ChatGPT is the better choice if you want one assistant for everything, enjoy steering the conversation and plan big, open-ended holidays a few times a year. It is flexible, widely available and getting better at travel.
Hey Ula is the better fit if the hard part of family travel is the repetition: the same details, the same budget arithmetic, the same Saturday-morning scramble. It is built for families who want to say it once and get three real options.

Questions
Is ChatGPT good for planning a family trip?
Yes, especially for brainstorming, drafting an itinerary and answering practical questions. It works best when you give it a detailed family brief and check prices and opening hours before you book.
Can ChatGPT remember my family's travel preferences?
Yes, if Memory is switched on. ChatGPT can remember details from past chats, and you can review, correct or delete what it remembers in Settings.
Can ChatGPT book a hotel for me?
Not by itself. Apps from Expedia and Booking.com can show live options inside ChatGPT, but you finish the booking on the partner's site.
How is Hey Ula different from ChatGPT?
Hey Ula is your AI travel companion, built only for trips, especially family weekends. It keeps your family's Travel DNA, suggests three real options against your budget cap, and is built to book only after you say yes.
