  3. The Best AI Travel Planners for Families (2026)

Published 12 October 2026Updated 12 October 2026

No single AI travel planner suits every family. For research and booking in one app, try Mindtrip. For a human expert behind the AI, try Layla. If you already live in ChatGPT or Google, start there. For a planner that remembers your kids, stroller and budget cap and suggests three weekend options, join the Hey Ula waitlist. We build Hey Ula, so we list its limits as plainly as everyone else's.

Updated 12 October 2026. We checked each company's own pages in October 2026. Features change quickly, so treat this as a snapshot. Sources are linked under Sources.

Planning a trip with kids is a different job. The hotel needs a cot, the walk from the station has to work at a four-year-old's pace, and the budget is a cap, not a suggestion. Most AI travel planners were built for solo travellers and couples first, so we looked at seven through a family lens.

How we chose

We judged each tool on five things that usually matter most on a family trip, plus cost:

  1. Remembers your family. Does it keep kids' ages, gear and pace between trips, or do you start from a blank chat every time?
  2. Real prices and totals. Does it show live prices from real sources, and does it help you see the full cost?
  3. Books only with your OK. If it can book, does it ask before money moves?
  4. Works where you already are. An app, a website, or a chat you already open every day.
  5. Kid-friendly fit. Does it understand naps, strollers, family rooms and short attention spans?
  6. Cost. What you get free and what you pay for. We only state a price when the company publishes it.

1. Mindtrip

The most complete research-and-book app for families who like to see everything on a map.

Mindtrip combines conversational AI with maps, photos, reviews and saved collections. You tell it how you travel and who is coming, and it builds editable itineraries. On 6 May 2026 it launched Mindtrip Flights with Sabre and PayPal, so travellers can find, compare and book flights in the same conversation (Sabre press release, 6 May 2026).

Pros

  • Strong maps, photos and reviews make it easier to judge a neighbourhood with kids.
  • Group planning works well when two parents, or a wider family, are deciding.
  • Flights can be booked in the same experience, with PayPal checkout.

Cons

  • It is a separate app and website to learn, not a chat you already use.
  • Family needs such as nap windows or stroller access still depend on you stating them.
  • Check Mindtrip's current pricing on its own site before you rely on it.

2. Layla

AI planning with a human safety net, which many parents will find reassuring for bigger trips.

Layla's FAQ says it builds itineraries covering flights, hotels, activities and dining using live pricing, and that you can hand the trip to a human travel advisor who can plan, book and manage it. The same FAQ says Layla is free to use, with no subscription fee: you pay for the travel you book (Layla FAQ).

Pros

  • Live prices for flights, hotels, trains and activities while you plan.
  • Human advisors can take over planning and booking.
  • Layla's own FAQ says it can plan family trips and balance sightseeing with downtime.

Cons

  • Best suited to bigger trips; it can be more than a family needs for a quick Saturday away.
  • You still need to bring the family checklist (naps, strollers, walking pace) yourself.

3. ChatGPT

The most flexible starting point, and probably the one you already have open.

ChatGPT can brainstorm destinations, draft itineraries and answer every "is this realistic with a toddler?" question. With Memory on, it can remember useful context from past chats. OpenAI explains how to review, correct or delete that memory (ChatGPT Memory). Expedia and Booking.com apps can show live options in the chat. Expedia says you continue on its site to book, and that the app is available to logged-in users outside the EU on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans (Expedia in ChatGPT). OpenAI's launch note also places apps outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom at launch (OpenAI, apps in ChatGPT).

Pros

  • Very good at turning a messy brief into a clear plan.
  • Memory can carry family details between chats if you turn it on.
  • Expedia and Booking.com apps bring real listings into the conversation, where they are available.

Cons

  • It is a general assistant, so you have to bring the family checklist yourself.
  • Plain chat answers can contain outdated prices or opening hours unless they come from a connected app.
  • Booking happens on the partner's site, not in ChatGPT.
  • Partner apps are not available in every region.

4. Google Gemini and AI Mode in Search

Best if your family's bookings, photos and emails already live in Google.

Google says Gemini pulls live information from Google Maps, Flights and Hotels when it builds an itinerary, and can use trip details from your emails. Gemini Spark can start filling an airline booking form and hand the final step back to you (Google, How Gemini plans trips). AI Mode in Search can track flight prices and, as of 27 August 2026, has started hotel booking in the United States in English, with partners including Booking.com, Expedia, Hilton and Marriott. You review the room and cancellation policy before paying, and the hotel or booking platform is the merchant of record (Google, 27 August 2026).

Pros

  • Deep access to Google's live travel data and maps.
  • Can build an itinerary around bookings already in your inbox.
  • Clear hand-back before you press book.

Cons

  • The best features depend on Google account settings, region and plan.
  • Hotel booking in AI Mode was described as a U.S. English rollout.
  • Family-specific needs are up to you to spell out.

5. Hey Ula

Built for parents who want the weekend planned from the family details they already gave.

Hey Ula is our product, so read this entry with that in mind. Ula is your AI travel companion. You tell her once about your family (kids' ages, stroller, walking pace, breakfast needs, budget cap), she keeps it as your Travel DNA, and she turns a free weekend into three real options. She is built to plan and book trips, and to book only after you say yes. Hey Ula is in Beta (early access). Join the waitlist at heyula.ai.

Pros

  • Family details are the core of the product, not an add-on.
  • Three options instead of an endless list, each judged against your cap and your kids.
  • Built to wait for your yes before any booking.

Cons

  • Waitlist only for now, so you cannot sign up and start instantly.
  • Focused on weekends and family getaways, so it is not the tool for a complex three-week, multi-country itinerary.
  • Pricing is not published yet.

6. Wanderlog

The best shared planning notebook, with AI on top.

Wanderlog is an itinerary and map app with an AI Assistant. Its own product page says it can auto-fill days with well-reviewed places, optimise routes, pull reservations from forwarded email (or auto-scan Gmail on Pro) and split expenses between travellers. It also compares lodging prices (Wanderlog AI trip planner).

Pros

  • Excellent for organising a trip with several adults.
  • Budgeting and cost splitting help on trips with grandparents or friends.

Cons

  • AI is a helper inside a planning tool, not a family-aware agent.
  • Some features, including Gmail auto-scan and route optimisation, sit on Pro. Check Wanderlog for the current price.

7. Wonderplan

A free, no-fuss way to get a first-draft itinerary.

Wonderplan turns a short form into a day-by-day plan you can edit and save as a PDF. Its FAQ says it is free "at least for now" (Wonderplan).

Pros

  • Free and quick, with a structured form that is easier than writing a prompt.
  • Lets you describe who is travelling and what you care about.

Cons

  • It is an itinerary tool, not a booking engine.
  • Limited memory of your family between plans.

How to pick

Start with the job, not the tool. For a bigger holiday you want to see on a map, Mindtrip or Layla will feel natural. For a quick plan in a tool you already use, write a good family brief (see our guide to planning a family trip with AI) and try ChatGPT or Gemini. Our Hey Ula vs ChatGPT comparison goes deeper. If the hardest part is repeating the same family details every weekend, that is the problem Hey Ula was built for. Read more about what an agentic travel agent is.

Our suggestion: try your top two with the same brief, compare the totals, and keep the one that asks the right questions about your kids.

Questions

What is the best AI travel planner for families?

It depends on the job. Mindtrip is strong for research and booking in one place, Layla pairs AI planning with human travel advisors, ChatGPT and Gemini are flexible general assistants, and Hey Ula is built for families who want weekend options from details they already shared.

Are AI travel planners free?

Many have a free tier. Wonderplan's FAQ says it is free for now, and Layla's FAQ says planning and human advisors have no subscription fee. ChatGPT and Gemini have free and paid plans. Prices change, so check each tool before you rely on it.

Can an AI travel planner book my trip?

Some can help you book. Mindtrip can book flights in-app via Sabre and PayPal, Google AI Mode has started hotel booking in the United States, and ChatGPT hands you off to apps such as Expedia to finish. Hey Ula is built to book only after you say yes, and is in Beta with a waitlist.

Do AI travel planners remember my kids' ages and needs?

Some do. ChatGPT has Memory, Gemini can use trip context from your inbox, and Mindtrip asks about your travel style. Hey Ula is designed around Travel DNA: kids' ages, stroller, walking pace, breakfast needs and budget cap.

Should I trust AI travel prices?

Treat them as a starting point. Tools that pull live prices from booking partners are more reliable than general chatbots, but always confirm the final total, taxes and cancellation terms before you pay.
