Oktoberfest 2027
18 September to 3 October (muenchen.de)

If you only need Tracht for one day at Oktoberfest, rent it: Bavarian Outfitters charges €49.90 for a Dirndl with blouse and apron and €59.90 for a Lederhosen set with shirt and socks (2026 prices). If you want to own it, budget roughly €100 to €250 for a decent cotton Dirndl, €250 to €400 for a real leather Lederhose, and from about €500 upwards at Munich's traditional houses. The best-value buys are second-hand, at Holareidulijö, Oxfam and the twice-yearly Trachten flea market in the Hofbräukeller.

What it really costs: three budget tiers

Prices below are 2026 figures from shop websites and Munich press. Prices for 2027 are not yet published, so expect small changes.

Tier 1: cheap costume (under €100)

Entry-level Dirndl sell for around €40 to €80 new, usually in a polyester blend, often with the blouse sold separately (MonsterDealz, August 2026). Fast-fashion chains sell Dirndl for about €50; a Vienna Tracht maker reviewing one such €49.99 Dirndl said she would rather wear no Dirndl than a cheap one (Der Standard).

This tier is where locals spot visitors. The City of Munich's own guide lists the giveaways: printed-on details instead of real embroidery or trim, synthetic fabric that is hot in a packed tent, and Lederhosen that are glued instead of stitched and feel rubbery rather than soft (muenchen.de).

Tier 2: mid-range (about €100 to €400 per piece)

A solid cotton or cotton-blend Dirndl with clean seams costs around €100 to €250. New leather Lederhosen sit around €200 to €400 (MonsterDealz). At Hirmer, the cheapest goat-leather Lederhosen start at €249.99. Angermaier lists Dirndl from €229 at full price, with sale pieces from €159.90.

Add the extras: a blouse is about €20 to €60, an apron €20 to €50, shoes €40 to €120 and Tracht socks €10 to €30 (MonsterDealz). A full mid-range outfit easily reaches €300 to €500.

Tier 3: heritage Tracht (€500 and well beyond)

This is Tracht made to last decades. Gottseidank, a Munich label, prices its Dirndl at roughly €599 to €899 on its own shop in October 2026. At Hirmer, Meindl goat-leather Lederhosen run from €499.99 to €899, and deer-leather (Hirschleder) pairs start at €999.99 and reach €1,799. Ludwig Beck's online Dirndl range goes past €2,000.

Why the jump? Leather is the main driver. Lederhosen are made from cow, goat, chamois or deer leather, and deer is the most expensive (Munich Tourism). A good pair, the city notes, lasts decades and is meant to show wear.

Where to buy in Munich

Traditional houses and department stores (Altstadt)

  • Lodenfrey, Maffeistraße 7, near the Frauenkirche. A large fashion house with a full Tracht range for women, men and children, including its own Lodenfrey München 1842 label and Gottseidank. Mon to Sat 10:00 to 19:00. Premium prices.
  • Ludwig Beck, Marienplatz 11. The department store's Tracht floor covers more than 500 m², redesigned in 2022 (TextilWirtschaft). Good for comparing many brands in one place, including a children's section and curvy sizes.
  • Hirmer, Kaufingerstraße 28. The men's fashion house has a large Tracht department with Meindl, Spieth & Wensky and young labels, plus a few Dirndl. Go here if you are a man who wants real choice in Lederhosen and a fitter who knows the brands.
  • Angermaier, Rosental 10 by the Viktualienmarkt, with the flagship at Landsberger Straße 103 in the west. A long-established Munich Tracht house with its own tailoring, so alterations can happen in the shop. Mon to Fri 10:00 to 19:00, Sat 10:00 to 18:00 (in-muenchen.de).
  • Meindl, Am Kosttor 1, Altstadt. A concept store for the Meindl leather brand, strongest on deer-leather Lederhosen and jackets. Mon to Sat 10:00 to 18:00.

Younger Munich labels

  • Almliebe, Hochbrückenstraße 10, near the Tal. Modern Alpine Tracht for women, men and children, with brands like Gottseidank, Hammerschmid and Meindl. Closed Monday; Tue and Wed 11:00 to 18:00, Thu and Fri 11:00 to 19:00, Sat 11:00 to 18:00.
  • Gottseidank, Schleißheimer Straße 273, Milbertshofen. Heritage-quality Dirndl and knitwear, with Lederhosen made by leather tailors in the Bavarian Forest. Mon to Fri 11:00 to 19:00, Sat 11:00 to 17:00.
  • CocoVero, Schäfflerstraße 3, Altstadt. A young label founded in 2011, produced in the EU, with a city-centre shop since 2022.

Second-hand and vintage

  • Holareidulijö, Schellingstraße 81, Maxvorstadt. Run for almost 30 years by a trained leather tailor who restores what she sells. Munich Tourism quotes used blouses from €10 and vintage Dirndl from €30 to €300. Hours are not published online, so call 089 2717745 before you go.
  • Lederhosenwahnsinn, Franz-Marc-Straße 10, in the Borstei estate (Moosach). A collection of around 650 Lederhosen; unworn entry pairs from about €250, rarities into the thousands, per Munich Tourism. Listed hours are Fri 15:00 to 20:00 and Sat 10:00 to 15:00, or by appointment. The listing is old, so phone 089 154484 first.
  • Oxfam shops at Türkenstraße 81 (Maxvorstadt), Orleansplatz 4 (Haidhausen), Fraunhoferstraße 6 (Isarvorstadt) and Spiegelstraße 11 (Pasing) collect donated Tracht and sell it each late summer. Oxfam says a full outfit of Dirndl, shoes and scarf can cost under €100 (in-muenchen.de).

Flea markets

The Trachtenflohmarkt im Hofbräukeller (Innere Wiener Straße 19, U5 Max-Weber-Platz) runs twice a year, in spring and before the Wiesn. The September 2026 edition ran on 12 and 13 September, 9:00 to 15:00. The 2027 dates are not yet announced (munich.travel). Arrive early for the widest choice.

Trachten flea markets also run outside the city. The Ayinger Bräu-Kirta Trachten flea market in Aying, for example, ran on Saturday 10 October 2026, 9:00 to 14:00, at the brewery grounds, Münchner Straße 21 (S-Bahn to Aying) (in-muenchen.de). Check the brewery's site for the next date. In early September, Munich's neighbourhood courtyard flea markets (Hofflohmärkte) often have Tracht too.

Rental

Bavarian Outfitters has four shops: Auenstraße 31, Schwanthalerstraße 83, Bayerstraße 22 and Lindwurmstraße 108. In 2026 a Lederhose alone cost €37.90, a Lederhose set with shirt and socks €59.90, and a Dirndl with blouse and apron €49.90, per rental day including 19% VAT. The second day is 50% off and returns are due by 11:00 the next day. Reserve online for free; you pay on pickup. Outside Oktoberfest and Frühlingsfest there are no fixed hours, so pickup is by appointment (bavarian-outfitters.de). Munich Tourism's older write-up mentions a €100 deposit; check the current deposit when you book.

When to buy

The cheapest time is right now. Sale timing analysis from MonsterDealz puts October and November as the best months, with Dirndl discounts it estimates at 30% to 70% straight after Oktoberfest, and September as the most expensive month. Treat the percentage as an estimate; it is not backed by published data. Sizes thin out in September, so if you buy in summer, buy by August.

In the weeks before the Wiesn, temporary Tracht shops open in the city centre selling cheap mass-produced stock, and in-muenchen.de advises skipping them in favour of quality. If you leave it to the final days, renting is the safer bet, and Bavarian Outfitters recommends reserving before you come, because walk-ins are not guaranteed your size. For Oktoberfest 2027, which muenchen.de lists for 18 September to 3 October 2027, plan to have your outfit fitted by late August. See our guide to planning Oktoberfest for the rest of the timeline.

How a Dirndl should fit

  • Bodice: it should sit close, like a second skin, and end at the narrowest point of your waist where the apron ties. The City of Munich's tip: the Dirndl must fit at the bodice, not the tummy, because altering a bodice later is complex and expensive.
  • Length: any length is seen at the Wiesn, but short Dirndl read as party fashion. For weddings and traditional events, knee-length or longer is expected, and traditionalists want the knees covered.
  • Blouse: usually white. The neckline of the blouse should match the neckline of the bodice, and C&A's style guide adds it should end just under the bust. The lower the bodice neckline, the shorter the blouse.
  • Apron: a little shorter than the skirt. Advice ranges from 2 to 3 cm shorter to a hand's width above the hem.

Choose cotton, linen or wool over polyester. A Munich second-hand dealer's rule, quoted by Munich Tourism: if you are going to sweat, sweat in cotton.

The bow rule

The apron bow is read from the wearer's point of view. It is an unofficial custom, not a rule anyone enforces:

  • Left: single, or open to a flirt.
  • Right: taken, engaged or married.
  • Front centre: traditionally girls and very young women; today mostly children, and also adults who would rather not say.
  • Back centre: the standard for tent waitresses, because it stays out of the way of the beer mugs; traditionally also widows.

Smooth the ribbons, tie the bow right over the waistband and avoid a double knot.

Lederhosen basics

  • Length: short (kurze), knee-length (Kniebund) or long. Short styles are increasingly popular.
  • Suspenders: Hosenträger belong to the outfit, often with an embroidered chest panel.
  • Fit: a veteran Munich dealer's advice is to wear them roomy, not tight; the only thing you should feel is the suspenders.
  • Shirt: checked or plain, often with a stand-up collar. A Janker (jacket) or waistcoat smartens it up for cold evenings.
  • Shoes: Haferlschuhe, the sturdy Tracht shoe laced at the side. Hirmer's Tracht manager says never with jeans.
  • Socks: knee socks, pulled up, or Loferl, the two-piece calf warmers that leave the foot bare. If you wear sneakers, skip the Tracht socks.

Care: wear them often and clean them rarely, and only through a specialist.

What kids wear

Children wear smaller versions of the same outfits: a Dirndl with the bow tied front centre, or short Lederhosen with suspenders. Ludwig Beck's children's Tracht range ran from about €10 for accessories to about €220 in October 2026, and Almliebe and Lodenfrey also stock kids' sizes. Children outgrow Tracht fast, so the second-hand markets are the smartest buy here. For the rest of a family visit, see our Oktoberfest with kids guide.

Men, women and non-binary travellers

Tracht is clothing, not a uniform with rules about who wears what. Women's Lederhosen are sold as their own category, cut for a women's fit, and Dirndl or Lederhosen can be worn by anyone. If neither a full Dirndl nor full Lederhosen feels right, take Hirmer's advice for anyone on a budget: buy one good piece, such as a waistcoat, a Janker or a knitted cardigan, and wear it with your own clothes. You do not need a complete outfit for one visit.

Buying online before you arrive vs in Munich

Buying online saves time in Munich but fit is the risk, especially the bodice. Most traditional houses, including Angermaier, Lodenfrey, Ludwig Beck and Hirmer, sell online, so you can check styles and prices before you fly. In Munich you get a fitting, staff who know the brands, and same-shop alterations at Angermaier.

If you rent, Bavarian Outfitters also ships within Germany by UPS, useful if you are staying outside the city.

VAT refund for non-EU visitors

German VAT is 19% and is included in shop prices. If you live outside the EU, you can reclaim it on goods you take home in your luggage, with these conditions (BayernPortal):

  1. Spend at least €50.01 including VAT on a single receipt.
  2. Ask the shop for a tax-free form at the till and show your passport. Refunds are voluntary, so ask before you pay.
  3. Take the goods out of the EU in your personal luggage within three months. Anything posted or shipped does not qualify.
  4. Show the goods, form and receipt to customs at your last EU exit point and get the export stamp.
  5. Claim the money from the shop or a refund agent; agents deduct a processing fee.

Residents of Northern Ireland are excluded, as is anyone holding a German residence permit for more than three months.

What locals know

  • The best Lederhosen are the old ones. Patina is the point, and a broken-in pair from a flea market looks more local than a new one.
  • Locals do not reserve Tracht for the Wiesn. It also comes out at the Frühlingsfest, the Auer Dult and the Kocherlball in the English Garden, so a good piece earns its cost.
  • One good Dirndl goes a long way: change the blouse and apron and it looks like a new outfit.
  • Shiny polyester, plastic zips, neon colours, glued-on rhinestones, animal prints and very short skirts are what make a Dirndl look like a costume (FashionUnited).

Questions

How much does a Dirndl cost in Munich?

Entry-level Dirndl cost about €40 to €80 and a decent cotton one about €100 to €250. Heritage labels such as Gottseidank charge roughly €599 to €899 (2026 prices).

Can I rent a Dirndl or Lederhosen for Oktoberfest?

Yes. Bavarian Outfitters has four Munich shops; in 2026 a Dirndl with blouse and apron cost €49.90 and a Lederhosen set with shirt and socks €59.90 per day, with the second day at half price. Reserve online in advance.

Where can I buy second-hand Tracht in Munich?

Try Holareidulijö in Maxvorstadt, the Oxfam shops, which sell donated Tracht each late summer, and the Trachten flea market in the Hofbräukeller, held twice a year.

What does the bow on a Dirndl mean?

Seen from the wearer's side, left means single, right means taken, front centre is for children or anyone who would rather not say, and back centre is worn by waitresses and traditionally widows. It is a custom, not a rule.

When is the cheapest time to buy a Dirndl?

Right after Oktoberfest, in October and November, when sales are deepest. September is the most expensive month and sizes run out.

Can tourists get the VAT back on Tracht?

Non-EU residents can reclaim Germany's 19% VAT on purchases of at least €50.01 per receipt, if the shop offers it and customs stamps the export form when you leave the EU with the goods in your luggage. Agents deduct a fee.
